...that is a set type of food, ie. Italian, Indian whatever, how do you go about ordering?

ie. the Menu lists something you like the look of and it's called something like, using Italian as an example, Carne Mista or Pollo Cacciatore.

Would you order by attempting to say the above phrases in your best (rubbish) Italian accent, or just say 'Mixed meat pizza' or 'mozzarella filled chicken breast'?

Just interested really.

I attempt to pronounce it. They know most of us are British Philistines with no concept of linguisics so they expect you to sound like a moron anyway. I'm just giving them what they want.

I feel less of a pillock now seeing as it seems everyone does it!

I ask because i'm planning on 'treating a friend to dinner tomorrow night, through the student *****-ness of a '2 meals for £10' voucher on the back of a parking ticket (even though i know i'll get reamed when she orders the most expensive glass of wine there like last time i took her out). I was looking at the menu and noticed I had no idea how the **** to pronounce anything on it :p Last time it was ok because it was was a place with good old English names for stuff!

I always try to order in the native language of the restaurant, well unless it's Chinese and then I just use English.

one glass of wine.... you wont get anywhere. ;)

if you order the win it could be cheap and then you get a bottle to boot.

I'll happily admit i'd be overjoyed if it was that kind of dinner, but it really isn't, unfortunately.

Depends if I knew the correct way of pronouncing it. In French, Italian, Spanish and German my pronunciation is acceptable good, with Italian and French my ascent is good. I have no qualms spekaing the pleasantries in Italian. Whenever I'm in Italy I will always order in Italian, the basics for this are very easy (Uno litro de Vino Rossso del Castello", may not be correct but close)

But now a days I always order in French... its what happens when you live in a French speaking country.

Usually I'll try to pronounce it correctly, occasionally when I fail then the look of baffled and hurt confusion gets too much from me murdering the language I'll point at the menu item. Happily that doesn't normally happen since 'Guiseppe' is actually really called John and is as Italian as I am, so he has no clue about how it is meant to sound anyway.
