When you return an Amazon product, do they check the serial number?

Hi all

I'm returning a product to Amazon after buying the exact same product for half the price. Rather than sending back the now opened product purchased at the full price, I'd like to send back the new unopened one. Does anyone know if Amazon check the serial number of the product on return or will they simply be happy it's the same product being returned?

Many thanks

M.

i'd be very surprised if they didn't, solely to stop people claiming something was damaged in the post and sending back their broken item, grey imports etc.

If it's high value then they may check. We never checked anything less than £50 and would issue a refund if it's unopened and not damaged but high value goods like TVs and laptops would be subject to further investigation.

If it's their own stock I wouldn't worry. If in the unlikely chance they did flag it up you can say you accidentally sent the wrong one back and they are welcome send that one back in exchange for the one you opened :)

I'd be surprised if they match serial numbers with specific orders, rather than just having a list of serial number that are their stock. So as long as the serial number is on their list it's not likely to flag up, if they bother checking at all.

It will be fine. As long as its EXACTLY the same product, all they will do is scan the barcode on the box, log it back into their inventory and issue you a refund.code

Just make sure the EANs/product codes are the same and their scanner wont go nuts when they scan it back in.

Job done.

Nope because the amount of times I have ordered a CPU or motherboard and it turns out the item inside is not the same. Someone did the old 'ole switch-a-roo at the warehouse.

I dont think even Amazon would be upset if they realised this either. They would probably blame their supplier and ask them to foot the bill. Amazon's suppliers would be squeezed because who the hell wouldn't want Amazon to stock and supply their product???

Tesco used to do the same thing. A certain not to be named now non existant DVD/Electrical supplier went bust dealing with Tesco because of similar issues like this.

Yes it's exactly the same item, slashed from £55 to £27. Luckily my first order was less than 30 days ago!

I'll send back the new product and keep the one I've already opened and used.

Yeah it will be fine. I used to work for a well known retailer a number of years ago similar to Amazon. Part of my induction to the leadership team was to visit the warehouse operation for picks and returns etc and trust me the amount of time it would take to check EVERY return just isnt worth it.

There is an hourly paid team that literally just scan the box, hook it up to your order, issue a refund code, and then this feeds into your card payment and refund completed. ZERO checks are done.

As mentioned just make sure the barcode is the same, because their scanner will freak out if it isnt and tell them they dont stock the product.

Next time just have a chat with their help desk they'll normally issue a refund for the difference because they know if they don't this is exactly what people will do anyway.

Why didn't you talk to their customer service before buying a new one, and say you want it at the cheap price or you'll send it back?
