just over 1 year ago I bought a newly released 5850.
This cost me £200 and was the 2nd to top-of-the-line that could be bought for a single GPU AMD card at the time (behind the 5870)
They went on to produce a duel GPU 5970 on that series but my point is this...

1 year on and what will my £200 get me now? A 6870 (which is only a 5 series revision anyway no matter how you dress it up)
a 6870 isn't even in AMD's top tier of products!

So 1 year on and my same £200 has dropped down to tier 2!

There is no need or productive use for such marketing such as this that AMD have used for the 6 series.

It should be quite simple... My £200 *should* get me a 6950 and not all this nonsense that AMD are doing. They really do seem to have lost the plot with not only their labelling of the 6 series but their pricing.

Instead i'm being told that I need to spend the same amount on nothing new.
No Thanks AMD!
My 1st experience with ATI/AMD GPU has been an interesting 1. Great performance, poor drivers (which I have been willing to overlook because of the cost benefit) but I will be going back to Nvidia and not the 6 series.

Asus 5850 £220 clocked to within 5% of 5870 speeds.

Around Christmas time you could get a 6950 for £220 or less and that can flash to 6970 speeds.

The additional cost you pay for a GTX 570 or 580 isn't worth the extra price per fps unless you got more money than sense.

The exchange rate last year was A LOT better for us, as graphic cards are priced in dollars. Since the Pound to Dollar rate sucks, we get a really bum deal i.e. we pay a lot more than we did last year.

But I understand where you are coming from. 7xxx series won't be too far away and with the release of the GTX 560, that will hopefully force some price changes.

6950 is the best card on the market right now at its current price point. It may not bust the 570/580s balls but it's close enough to not matter when it's priced way below them.

Shirley you can't be serious?

AMD Radeon 6950 costs the same as the ATI 5850 a year ago, that is $299.

AMD Radeon 6970 is cheaper than what ATI 5870 used to be, that is $369 against $399.

All other factors are just variables that aren't affected by AMD in any way.
