I'm sick of the drought, times gone by you had C&C (before they lost the plot), Age of Empires etc etc.

There's nothing of this calibre at the moment, or if there is it's passed me by! Anyone know of anything decent coming out or ones I may have missed?

Whilst I love Total War, I wouldn't call it RTS.

I think we're seeing the end of RTS. It's not really evolved. Starcraft 2 is probably the most successful RTS game currently and that hardly deviated from the original, considering there was twelve years between them. Where is has evolved it got kinda shunned like Dawn of War 2. It's also kind of hard to play RTS 'casually'.

Plus you can't port it to or from console, and you can't put in XP gain and unlocks to keep people playing until you release DLC.

Best bet it to look in the strategy section of Desura. There's a load of indie strategy games in there.

How hard is it to launch a game and click skirmish mode?.

That's because RTS don't work on console, end of. I had Tiberium Wars for the Xbox 360 and it was absolutely terrible compared to the PC. You could hardly play it on a competitive level due to limited controls (while also being slow) and hardware restrictions ruined it's fun. I also tried Red Alert 3 on Xbox 360 and it was worse than Tiberium Wars.

How well do you think a top end RTS such as Starcraft 2 would do on console? Not very. RTS is really a PC specific genre due to its complexity compared to other genres such as FPS.

How many people buy a game for £30~ and log on for 30 minutes to play vs the AI? Now compare this to a comparable price shooter you can jump in and out of with friends. I would say the current market for RTS answers that question.

I wasn't insinuating it should be put on console, I said it can't.

Roller coaster tycoon 3, best real time strategy out there.

Will i make money on that hotdog stand? i have to make split second decisions to decide whether the inspecters will enjoy my hospitality.
Have i got enough toliets and bins, so my guests done puke everywhere?

appart from the fact you can pause and fastforward. And you need the brain age of a six year old.

best RTS ever. ;)

Nonononono! RCT3 was terrible compared to 1 & 2!! Go play those :D

I'm still playing AoE3 at the moment after finding a way to play it properly on Windows 7 using a program called GameRanger. As you have already mentioned AoE and C&C I don't really know of any recent ones that I could mention, aside from Starcraft 2, however I have not played it but am quite tempted to.

I have played:

Company of Heroes
Starcraft 2
World in Conflict
Starcraft 2
Anno 2070
Total War (various)
Supreme Commander 2

With the exception of Anno 2070, none of those are particularly recent (ie out this year)
