Intel took a 13th gen refresh of their CPUs and rebranded it as a new range.I am finding it very difficult to find any of the new motherboards that released alongside "14th gen" . Is there a shortage ? what is going on?
Just make sure you buy a board with flashback and you're good. Alternatively, I believe MSI call theirs "MAX", Gigabyte has added an "X" and Asus has a list here.I am finding it very difficult to find any of the new motherboards that released alongside "14th gen" . Is there a shortage ? what is going on?
Yeah all z790 but the newer boards have some really good QOL updates. There are no new motherboards as such for the 14th gen chips.
Unless you're talking about the one ASUS has released but it's still z790.
Agreed on wifi 7 but Thunderbolt 7 might be worth it for external GPUs and other connectivity. Onboard wifi is usually too impeded by the chassis to be useful for me.Other places have these listed but the jump in cost compared to the standard z790 version for wifi 7 and thunderbolt 5 support isn't worth it imo.
ROG Maximus Z790 APEX Encore is looking good for my needs yet the two lone dimm slots have been pushed VERY close to the processor heatsink and may cause an issue !!. More chance of running a PCI5 video card and PCI5 M2 drive simultaneously too (as the ROG Maximus Z790 Hero is unclear in that respect). Wifi7, pcie5 and higher stable ddr5 speeds etc for future proofing...I am finding it very difficult to find any of the new motherboards that released alongside "14th gen" . I highly doubt you'll get your money back from a future proofing POV. The socket is dead now (as far as we know), so there's no future CPUs that'll use/need higher-end DDR5 and with PCiE5/Wifi7, if you don't need them right now (hardly anyone does, especially gamers), I think you'd be better off banking half the £750 you need to buy one of these boards (i.e. £375) and just using that to buy a 15th gen motherboard when they release.More chance of running a PCI5 video card and PCI5 M2 drive simultaneously too (as the ROG Maximus Z790 Hero is unclear in that respect). It's not about money but making the most of what we have here for now (two pc's) that will hopefully do us for the next 2 years or so. That includes upgrading our 3080ti video cards. Saving money for a next gen motherboard mean a new processor too !!I highly doubt you'll get your money back from a future proofing POV. Sure, but if you're upgrading in 2 years then you'll be buying one anyway? The Apex is a board that overclockers use to reach the top of the rankings and I suspect most of them don't even pay for it.Saving money for a next gen motherboard mean a new processor too !!
I do love everything about the Apex because it’s mental but Tetras is correct, you can’t really justify spending £750 on a motherboard for a socket that is done.ROG Maximus Z790 APEX Encore is looking good for my needs yet the two lone dimm slots have been pushed VERY close to the processor heatsink and may cause an issue !!. Yes Overclockers, where is the new batch of ASUS cards ??
The Z790-e has a very small/poor PCH heatsink. Something the Hero and APEX Encore appear to have sorted.I’d also look at the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E which is an 8 layer PCB full ATX motherboard.
You’ll get far better value for your money Upgrading once every 5 years rather than once every 10.Hello, do you know how the naming hierarchy of MSI cards works please? I worked out "Max" is the model for the 14th gen refresh, but within that there is Godlike, Ace, Tomahawk etc. Is there any thats regarded as "best" please? OR, if no-one fancies a long answer, a link to somewhere that ranks them? One that can rag the backside off any game now, and still be capable of, at worst, creaking along in 10 years time?
Have read upthread that MSI are well regarded, so likely to get one of them, also read (a few posts prior to this) that its going to be the last mobo for a finished processor line, but as I currently have an I7-2600 you can see i dont update often, so unlikely to be worried about next gen until a decade from now at current rate! Pretty much got my heart set on a 14th gen KF cpu
I wouldn't buy an expensive board in the hope it'll last longer, as said above it's more about the features. One that can rag the backside off any game now, and still be capable of, at worst, creaking along in 10 years time?
- Pro is their lowest-end brand, it is equivalent to giving you the features for a basic desktop PC. Usually the board has -P or -E after the chipset. Though, I'd hardly call a X670 Pro board basic. The boards with -A seem to be a step above.I worked out "Max" is the model for the 14th gen refresh, but within that there is Godlike, Ace, Tomahawk etc. Is there any thats regarded as "best" please? Agreed with all of this.I wouldn't buy an expensive board in the hope it'll last longer, as said above it's more about the features.

- Gaming Plus is a gaming brand, it's a bit more expensive than Pro and you usually get plenty of USB ports and sound jacks, with pretty substantial heatsinks.
- Tomahawk is their mainstream gaming board, it has a higher-end spec than the Pro and is built as an all-rounder to compete with mainstream boards from other manufacturers, e.g. good VRMs, decent sound.
- Carbon and Edge have RGB shinies, Edge has white heatsinks and at least for B650, unlike the Tomahawk they have a PCI-E 5.0 M.2 slot.
- Ace is their premium brand, similar to Asus and the Hero brand. It has a premium VRM, loads of USB ports, USB PD/Fast charge, PCI-E 5.0 graphics, 10Gb LAN and audio with integrated DAC and spdif.
- Godlike is the "money no object" brand, it has the highest-end of everything and the feature set is much like the ACE (premium, VRM, loads of USB, 10Gb LAN), but including the latest features like USB 4/Thunderbolt on the rear I/O and an onboard LED panel.
For most users (e.g. gamers), going higher than the Tomahawk is usually unnecessary.
