Where can I find a web developer?

I asked here before to see if anyone here wanted the job but as I've had no bites it's time to cast the net a bit wider. We need someone to migrate our site to another host as our current host isn't up to much anymore. We're happy to pay, however we need someone who can take ownership and also help iron out any kinks once it's done.

Due to this I'm averse to the likes of Fiverr as I need someone I have at least a bit of rapport with rather than some rando in India.

Any idea where to find someone?

Cheers :)

Hmmm, gonna keep a bit of a record on here of what's going on as it could make for some entertaining reading.

So far I've had a few people approach me, one is $10 an hour which doesn't fill me with confidence. I typed out a decent response with what I need, the website URL and whatnot and his response to that was basically "accept offer send login details ok".

Lol.

many of the hosts will migrate it over for you.. things like php extensions are quite easy to install too.

I'd be careful what you pick as you're giving someone access to your DB etc.

Have you selected the new host? Do they offer a site migration service?

No, not yet. I guess this leads me on to my next question...

That's why I'm careful too, not keen on giving out our info to randoms.

Anyone know what sort of server I'd be looking at? We don't have the traffic to justify a dedicated server, and our site is too heavy for a shared host so I'm looking at VPS. Would a 4gb server, dual core do it do you think?

Apologies for all the questions, but I'd prefer to have this done once and for all.

I mean, it sounds pretty easy... copy files over FTP to new host location. Change DNS entries. Test? Shouldn't be much at all, unless I'm missing something?

Whilst they're easy to install, it'll massively depend on the hosting provider if they'll deploy it especially in a "shared" environment (VPS/dedicated is typically easier), so it's always worth contacting providers beforehand with requirements before settling on one.

Depends on the requirements for Invision (i'm assuming that's the platform) and current traffic but you're probably on the right track.
Although does Invision have a community of sorts (forums, subreddit etc)? If so, then it might be worth asking there as other users might be able to give you a better idea on what hardware to deploy vs traffic/platform setup etc as well as point you in the direction of dedicated platform devs rather than jack-of-none-unless-its-wordpress web monkey.
Once you've got specs and requirements, then providers should be able to offer suitable "packages".

That's usually what everyone thinks, especially clients, until it isn't

https://stablepoint.com/ is run by a forum member, they have a great track record (https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/oc-uk-host-review.17411674/page-22).

I would enquire with them as you may get a more personal setup, especially as even small forums can be resource heavy and need some knowledge to run nicely.

You still may need a dev of some description to aid the migration. I would throw my hat into the ring as it's my day job but I don't tend to get involved with the deployment side of things these days.

Have you tried your local school or university?

No, but it's certainly something worth considering, cheers :)

This looks great, thanks! Would love to support one of the forum members rather than a megacorp.

@Beansprout do you have any VPS options? I see you have dedicated servers which are beyond the scope of this project, and shared hosting which seem to support multiple sites rather than one hungry one. Not really sure how this works as they don't really give an accurate representation of what resources are used. Can you confirm please?

Cheers :)

I’m also a web developer and would be happy to help you out…I think we did some things together in FG a few years back

Thanks for your answer. It helped me a lot.

I do web work, I handle the look and UX but I have an amazing tech guy who is pretty bullet proof. He's worked on WP and magento sites and even coded/designed backend distribution software for one of the major supermarkets. We've done some seemingly impossible things and if ever there's an issue he gets it sorted.

Like others have said, there are cheap options available, the new hosting may even do it for you. If it's a large site with large databases you might want to spend a bit for peace of mind.

PM if you have any questions and good luck! :)

Well after a week of me not being able to help due to work, @antijoke came through and transferred us in no time at all.

The site is so much zippier now it's unreal, have a little look if you want www.forevergaming.co.uk

Can happily recommend James if anyone needs any dev work done, dude's a champ :)
