One (or more) of you knowledgeable types might be able to help me.

Sitting in the drive is my wifes old 106 Diesel which I'm trying to shift, I don't know whether to just get it scrapped or try and sell it on, main points are as follows:

Pros: brand new clutch, new pads and discs, recent timing belt change, new tyres all round (michelin something or others), starts first time, runs perfectly (always has) and is very economical.

Cons: bodywork damage (dent in bonnet, rear quarter panel, front quarter panel), substantial paint damage (some turd threw brake fluid all over the roof and bonnet), no tax, no MOT (though I'm convinced it'll pass no problem). > 100K miles.

What would you do with it?

Stick some notices up in the local post office/shops or something - even put it on freecycle and give it away. Unless the scrap value is very good, I'd personally rather see it being used, there are loads of people who would love a cheap runabout and not care about aesthetics

If I don't have to give it away I'm not planning to, clutches aren't cheap ;)

Good first car, or perfect car for some chav wanting to mod. Chuck it on gumtree, and PH. See what happens.

pay the 30 quid to see if it'll go through an MOT, then advertise it for sale. Some new driver will be interested for a cheap first car. Will be worth substantially more if it has a 12 month ticket.

Good idea

One thing to be wary of, depending on the extent of the body damage, is sharp edges can be an MOT failure

ebay. I sold 2 completely knackered 106 diesels on there for about £300 each. One had a completely shafted gearbox and clutch, the other the engine blew up, neither were very good condition and had no mot or tax.

MOT it (you say it'll pass) and stick it on the bay for the cost of the good bits?

an MOT on something like that is make or break for someone who might need a cheap car. the bad bits are only cosmetic...?

It's not insured and it's not taxed, so to get it to the nearest MOT centre will day insurance at around £25 and I'd need to cough up for 6 months tax (tax camera vehicles are in abundance here), that's another £100 down the tubes.

Buyout price or just bids on them?

don't need tax for an mot, must know some old guffer you can buy a pint or 2 to drive it on DOC

Without the MOT the car is worthless, people will assume it has no MOT because it is a rotten nail which will not pass.

MOT the car and it will be worth quite a bit of money. You do not need tax to drive to a booked MOT (Infact you cannot buy tax without an MOT certificate anyway) so its just the insurance issue. Many garages will collect a car to MOT it.

think i got messaged through ebay with an offer and a phone number both times.

Again, both times the car did not have an MOT.

I also sold an E46 beemer for over 4 and a half grand with 1 day of MOT left.

People who use ebay are daft, use this to your advantage.

Garages don't MOT cars in Northern Ireland, but if I only have to get day insurance to get it there then it sounds like a plan.
