My gf is desperate for cat, it's all she talks about and i was thinking of getting one on my way home from work to surprise her with becuase she is ahving a rough time atm. I looked at the web sites for a few local rescue homes but they seem to have random opening times 12 - 4 mon, wed, thurs. Is there like a pets at home for cats. I checked ebay but no joy.

Also, is there like pedigree to avoid or mixs to avoid?

Try local papers and free ads for kittens that need homing. I'm sure I wont be the only person to say this though, a cat shoudln't be an impulse buy, but if your girlfriend really wants one then go for it!

Have either of you owned a cat before? It's certainly not something you should rush into...

Best to get one from a rescue shelter and give it a loving home. If you want to surprise her, take some time off work and you can both go and visit some shelters to find the right cat for you.

Call the shelters - they may be 'available' at times other than those stated.

If you can't get to a resscue then check your local paper as people may be advertising kittens on there. Be prepared to pay over the odds though as some people think random moggies are worth something.

I would push you towards a rescue cat, but you may have to be homechecked, and also pay a large adoption fee, although you would get a spayed/ neutered, chipped and vaccinated cat for your fee.

If you want a pedigree, then I'd say local paper or pet shop (for adverts not for cats!)

If you live near Leeds, there was a market stall that sold kittens..... (They die about 3 weeks later though).

Why not? Cats arnt hard work at all, you need feed them and give them a bit of attention and thats it :p, dont need to take them out for walks or any crap like that. Obviously you will need a litter box and everything, although ours doesnt have one, it just knows to go outside when it need a poo lol.

Great idea to get a cat to suprise her imo.

It totally depends on the cat.

Why would anyone buy a cat from a market trader?

"Come get yer cats, 3 fer a fiver!"

People did, because some people don't realise that you don't have to buy animals.

Bit OT but there was an animal rescue stand at Elvington air show last year and they had brought a few kittens along. There were some kids poking them going 'ask how much they are and see if mum will buy us one'.

It's not an impulse purchase we have talked about and lindz had a cat at her mum and dads. So i think we will be ok i want to take on a rescue cat but it's just awkard with the hours the shelters open
