Hi all,

I've got a piece of 18mm MDF that I want a 10" round hole cut into.

Is there anywhere I can take it to get someone to do it in case I mess it up?

Do B&Q do this kind of thing?

Thanks,

G

i highly doubt B&Q will even cut MDF for you as most places dont cut it due to the fine dust it creates. Also if you have already bought the MDF i dont think they would like you coming along and asking them to cut a hole in it.

How good does the hole need to be? are you able to use a jigsaw?

If not you could always try and ask somewhere that deals with wood everyday like a timber merchant or carpentry shop. They would be able to use a router and some sort of jig to do it, unless you have a router and fancy giving it a go yourself!

you can do it with a router fairly easy it you have a long enough bit, just don't try and cut through it in one pass. Other than that use a jigsaw.

The hole will not be visible it's for a parcel shelf mounted sub, I used a jigsaw to cut it down to size but figured with the flat blade it wouldn't be good at doing a turning cut. Am I wrong?

Sweet :)

How about a hole for a 6x9 speaker and a 6.5" circle? Do you think I could do all of this with a jigsaw?

Thanks,

G

I suspect so, if you use a decent blade and take it slow, drill a hole big enough for the blade inside the cut out area, then work the jigsaw out to the line (if you do it right, you end up with the blade following the line as it meets it).
If you had a Router, that could possibly do it very easily, as many have a trammel bit that lets you anchor them to let you do circles easily as it sets the distance away from the centre the router works (so you just take the route round a few times at increasing depths).

Remember to wear some old clothes (or a boiler suit/apron), googles and mask.
And do it either in the Garage, or outside, as MDF dust isn't very nice, and makes a heck of a mess.

Will the holes be visible?
As if not, it doesn't need to be quite so neat and tidy which makes things easier :)

I assume you want to cut a perfect circle? Depending on the diameter you could use a hole saw drill bit.

At work I use a festool jigsaw with a circular cutting attachment which is adjustable, but it's not cheap to buy.

Just remember to take it very slowly, if you force the jigsaw blade in to the MDF it will over-heat. And dull the blade, wear a mask
I work with MDF and MFC, just imagine the fun you could have with these
I had my case window polycarbonate cut on this

Jigsaw can do this easily, router just does a neater job (essential if you recess the driver).

B&Q will cut a board to size in store, they have a big XY axis circular saw with built on vacuum dust extraction. They can't however do anything other than straight right-angled cuts nor work on pieces smaller than about 20CM (can't remember exactly).

The dust is indeed a nightmare, took me quite a while to vacuum it all out of my garage after building some speakers!
