Just bought a pair of 150Gb raptors and I decided to set them up in raid 0
,initially both drives where picked up but when I set them in raid they dissappeared, what have I done wrong, my board is set to allow sata and bios are updated what else do I need to do,
I currently run a 40gb for OS and a 120gb storage which I will be adding the raptors to boost the storage, my mobo is an asus A7N8X-E old I know but its done well.

So any advise would be appreciated.

Have you installed the Raid drivers for your motherboard? If not that is probably why they have disappeared. You get the drivers from the Asus website and then they need installed, after that you may have to go into Drive Management to format them (Control Panel - Computer Management - Drive Management).

I personally wouldn't use a Raid0 array for storage though, using them as two separate drives would be safer for your data and probably not much slower given the intended uses. :)

Thanks I am only putting them in raid to get to grips with the whole raid setup and eventually I will switch them to OC drives but for now while I play about they can be storage .

Ok fair enough, just remember that you can't split up the Raid array without losing data in the future so you would need to back up if you do choose to break up the array. In fact backing up is a good idea anyway. :)

Ok there in raid and windows detects them in the hardware section but when I look for them in explorer as a drive there not there, also when I delete the raid setup and have them seperate there not detected either , but before when I tested them they showed straight up, the only thing is when I tested them I only had one sata lead so they got tested one at a time, also all the Mobo drivers are upto date as far as I know .
They just arnt registering in explorer.

Did you try going into Drive Management to see if they show up there as they might still need formatted? Also it isn't just motherboard drivers you need, there are specific Raid drivers on the Asus website that will be available for your motherboards controller.

I downloaded these drivers for the HDD- Silicon_SATA1.0.50 couldnt see any others and by drive management what do you mean exactly , also when I hit F4 to create the raid setup I have individually formatted both drives but it wont let me fomatte them as one.

Drive Management is under Computer Management as I detailed in my first post. It is in there that you need to format the drives normally but that relies on Windows' ability to see the drives. It doesn't matter if you individually format the drives or not, they need to be formatted as a pair in the new logical drive you have created (e.g. the Raid array). Check in Drive Management, if it isn't there then you need to go a step back and make sure that you have installed the Raid drivers correctly.

Done it I was looking in sytem instead of admin tools but I created a partion and formatted it an hey presto a new drive , the only thing is it only picks up 289GB is that normal is the rest taken up by the raid settings. :D

The 289gb is normal, it stems from a long standing practice - hard drive manufacturers consider 1gb to be 1000mb, the rest of computing considers 1gb to be 1024mb so when you combine the two you will always find you have slightly less than the rated capacity. The file system will take up a bit of room but not that much.

Glad you have it sored though. :)
