Where did Suicide Squad go wrong, how would you have fixed it? (SPOILERS!)

I know there is another regular thread, but I am finding this movie fascinating from the point of view of examining where it went wrong, how would you fix it, and trying to read between the lines of what (if any) the original intentions were for the movie.

Every time I think about this movie, I do actually like it. I want to love it but I can't. I keep wondering at what point in the process did it get derailed.

Here are my personal thoughts about how it got derailed with a bit of how I'd have fixed it in editing. What we do know as fact is they reshot a few scenes to add the humour. This is often the part that rings the most false throughout the movie, good humour needs flow not bad one liners filmed months later.

There was a lot of mystery about what they were going to deal with in the city, they literally almost left it out of the script entirely. If the original filming/script was planning on it being a Joker driven storyline they could have easily changed the weird human hybrid monsters with VFX. If you look at all the Joker henchmen they always had weird hats/helmets on.

One of the biggest criticisms leveled at the movie is why relatively regular people, albeit crazy sociopaths, would be put against world ending events; it took presumably at least a day or two to get them out of prison, inject in their necks and get them to whatever the city was. While we are lead to believe that Batman, Wonderwoman and The Flash just sat idly by.

If they were planning on a toned down storyline and Warner Bros. decided to force a big bad world ending event on them. Most of the original filming could have gone either way. Diablo wasn't the hugely over powered character until right at the end. He did nothing for 90% of the movie. The tone of the movie literally changed the second Waller stepped onto the helicopter. On my second watch through the movie I was keeping an eye on dialogue and I only counted twice two vague references to "spinning ring of trash in the sky". Once by Harley and the other Deadshot.

Another option would be a world ending event that the Suicide Squad were going to have nothing to do with and Warner Bros. intervened and forced it. Again with the tone changed with Waller + Chopper. Perhaps it was supposed to be a storyline in the background while The Justice league was off battling the big bad? But we don't see that part until the 2017 movie?

So how would I have edited it before it hit the cinema? I would have had the witch woman in some exotic foreign city looking for her brothers statue. She gets away from Waller during which confusion the Joker is looking for Harley discovers the Suicide Squad plan and also steals the witches heart. The Joker tracks the witch down and gets her to lay waste to the foreign city in order to drawer out the Suicide Squad. Waller is in the city, in that room as some kind of CIA safe house, the Joker kidnaps Waller to get the neck bombs deactivated.

You cut all the SEAL team stuff, you cut the Brother terrible CGI monster thing, the Suicide Squad are there for US government deniability. Flag is there AWOL and simply try to get his crazy witch girlfriend back.

The bad guys with the weird lumpy heads are just Joker henchmen, maybe a bit enhanced by the witch but not total conversation we saw in the Cinema. Perhaps with a Joker twist to make them more crazy/weird.

You can have the same roof top scene with Harley jumping to the chopper and getting away with the Joker, but right at the end. In between you do cool shots of Suicide Squad having big fights and explosions. They can have a toned down fight with the witch as the Joker tells her to take them out as he cant face them himself. Pretty much the same scene, just no swirly thing in the sky and not Harley saving the day. Use Katana instead (making her relevant) and have Flag crush the heart.

Not a perfect recut, but one that both saves the already filmed footage. Very little reshoots and saving VFX budget by not having swirly crap in the sky or a giant walking Egyptian guy fighting Diablo. Diablo who by the way in this movie can just throw fire.

Just my rambling thoughts, I am sure no one read it all.

I would have put a 'normal' person in the squad, something like a Luke Skywalker(untapped badass potential) or a Star-Lord(witty thief with a heart of gold) type of character. This character would be the connection the audience has with story (this is needed due to all the weirdos that run around).

I would lower the stakes. Not every bloody film has to be about saving the world.

I would make the Joker what he was in TDK, a relentless, highly intelligent and manipulative agent of chaos that gets trashed in direct confruntations but pushes the right psychological buttons to accomplish his goals. What's this about Harley being his lover?? Weak, the Joker does not love.

Finally, I would hire competent screen writers n I would release the film without doing a million reshoots n redesigns.

To be honest I didn't like Jareds take on The Joker. It seems so disjointed and inconsistent. Ledger, Romero and even Nicholson were better IMO.

I'm still not convinced about The Enchantress either and thought Cara was very wooden and the voice seemed like it had been dubbed over at times, particularly at the end.

If you disect it. It's actually complete tripe. Not really anything about the film is worth keeping or saving. Repeated 1 dimensional characters that do the same things on every scene.

Less Will Smith.
Fewer tears and 'opening up' in the bar scene from two male characters.
Fewer crappy one liners.
Fewer last minute character introductions, who serve no purpose.
Zero crocodile man. He was awful.

More Harley Quinn, i thought she was the best character - which doesn't say much I guess.

I think DC need to rethink their plans if this is the sort of stuff we have to look forward to in future.

script that's where it went wrong.

also the one mission didn't help, there should have been a couple of smaller missions to help character building and team bonding.
but mainly the scripting for the dialogue was rubbish.

There would be no fixing it and I'll tell you why with 2 words ..... studio interference.

Unless you're a proven box office pulling director, a major studio who is investing millions of money into a product they want to succeed doesn't care about how it gets done, they just want to see the returns.

David Ayer's original cut was darker and was probably a hundred times better but we'll probably won't be seeing that cut because the studio decided they wanted a different product. They reacted to the success of Deadpool, made note of how much people liked Guardians of the Galaxy & Ant Man due to the humour, got disappointed by critical response of Dawn Of Justice's dark tone and decided ..... hmmmm we need this movie to be more lighter & funny. The company that did the trailers were probably handed notes on how to market the film and given some pre-edited footage to cut the trailers as we had seen. They wanted more Harley Quinn in the movie based on the response of the trailers to sell it.

You can speculate where things went wrong or decisions made that didn't work but really at the end of it, the bean counters at Warner Bros. dictated the movie that ended up on screen.

Just like Alien3, the studio didn't trust the person they hired .... the Assembly Cut of that movie on bluray is miles better and may have had a better response critically.

I just hope we get to see the original David Ayer cut ..... supposedly the novelization of the movie is closer to the original cut

It is absolutely terrible. Everyone involved should be ashamed (with the except of Margot Robbie who turned in a half decent performance), and DC should kill their extended Universe and start again, with an actual plan.

If it was so terrible would it of not flopped? It has done anything but.

In my opinion its a decent enough movie, watched it at the Printworks last Friday.

No....

A films quality has little bearing on its financial success, especially given an establish franchise such as this.

You're perfectly entitled to enjoy the film, but that does not make it a good film.

It was a 5 out of 10 for me. It was better than expected but they really should have just gone r rated and made it darker.

Cara wtf her name is who played enchantress was god damn awful, the worst performance I can ever recall seeing.

Not a big fan of Leto's joker, but where do you go after ledgers performance?

Croc was a bit pointless and they need to stop giving Jai Courtney work.

Better than man of steel and BvsS, not that it means much.

Was it a bad film? No. Quite enjoyable actually but it certainly had its flaws. Does that make it a good or great film? Far from it. As above, many of the issues the film had were likely the result of the studio asking for changes to be made during filming or editing. It was certainly better than BvS Cinema cut anyway.

Explain Bieber :D

Opinions, everyone has one its just at no point in history has there been such an easy way to tell (almost) everyone on the planet your opinion as there is now.

While I (and a lot of people) would agree Bieber is rubbish there are obviously a lot of people who believe otherwise, does this mean they are right and we are wrong (or vice versa) no, it simply means different people have different tastes.

Same with this and many other movies, some people liked it some people didn't it's just that with this ( as with many things now days) the haters seem to shout the loudest.

Nothing wrong with this by the way, it's freedom of speech it's just that a lot of people who hate things (or love things) these days assume everyone should think the same way they do and anyone that doesn't is wrong and there in lies the issue, this isn't about right or wrong its all about opinions and taste. ;)

Also, Haters gona hate! :D
