I'm building a new PC but I don't know where to start when buying a graphics card. Any was I can refine my search? Do you recommend ATI or Nvidia for example

Depends what your budget is. What do you use you pc for. If you are a mild ganer then the gtx460 or the 5850 would be good. If you just use for web surfing then any cheap card will do. Atm nvidia probaby is the best for hardcore gamers. What are the rest of your specs?

I'm getting the Samsung BX2235 which is 22" (21.5 actual I think) and I haven't really got a proper budget and will be using it for high quality gaming.

ok at that res;

That would be the budget choice for me. That is enough power to play any game acceptably. You might at times wish it had a little bit more.

That is enough power. Will play any game at high settings. Only instance where you might need to change a setting would be crysis warhead or turing depth of field off in metro.

Both those cards are good value and will do the job. Also with aftermarket coolers on they will be quiet doing it too.

Anything more is entering into the realms of excess. The absolute limit would be either a 570 or a 6950 with the 6950 coming out as the better value- you can effectivley turn it into a 6970- I have one and could do this but it just is not necessary. I game at 1900x1200- at stock my 6950 eats anything for breakfast- only metro with all the settings maxed makes it stutter a bit and once dof is turned off even that runs smoothly.

If you can hold out the 560 from nvidia is on the horizon. Suppliers will want to shift their stocks of 460s, amd will likley have to react to keep their offerings competetive and this will probably mean lower prices overall.

The 560 will probably be a very strong card in its own right too although this is speculation.

If I were you AND you have the cash a 6950 really does handle the anti aliasing and other dx11 features way way better and whilst it isnt quite as good value as it was at new year, will make you very happy!

If money is no object bag a 570, if you can afford to wait then hold off until the 560 has been shown and the market has reacted. There are a lot of cards out there now and there should be some bargains once nvidia tries to retake the initiative in the mainstream 'budget' sector.
