Where do I stand - Only able to get 1Mb ADSL

I've had to make due with 1Mb ADSL since I moved house 2 years ago. The problem is the phone line having a terrible SNR Ratio. The voice calls are fine with no noise but the routers (I've tried 4 over the years) all report bad SNR etc.

Where do I stand? Is there a rule for acceptable BB connection speed. I'm only 1.5K away from the exchange (cable route not as the crow flys) We don't have cable in the area so I'm stuck with ADSL.

I've spoken to others on my road who all have the same problem. Max speed I've heard of is 1.5Mb!

Any help of info would be great :)

There's no minimum speed (or requirement that you get ADSL at all) so there isn't much you can do.
There might be some benefit to Max, provided you got enough to get over the IP profile steps.

They're listed here, and from the 31st of July 350Kbps, 750Kbps, 1250Kbps and 1750Kbps were added.

The most important ones for you would be 750kbps (sync >864kbps), 1Mbps (>1152kbps), 1250kbps (>1440kbps), 1.5Mbps (1728kbps) and 1750kbps (2016kbps).

If you're on an up to 8Mbps product, you should already be on Max - posting the usual stats (sync rate, SNR margin, attenuation) might be useful though.

1mb is to low, complain(get money off, free upgrade to next level of service if possible).

Garbage.

I cant see how this is garbage exactly? if your paying for an up to 8mb service and its not up to scratch then why should you pay full price for it? i wouldnt.

Because you're getting the most your line can do? It isn't 8Mbps, it's up to 8Mbps - as long as the ISP was clear that what you would get would depend on your line, congestion et al, there isn't a lot you can do.
The ISP isn't obliged to provide 8Mbps, or anything near that.

Fair enough if there was a fault, but so far there's been no evidence there is one.

Well accoding to the ASA, ISP's are only allowed to use "up to 8mb" if it comes close to what the customer is actually getting, yes i know that it will never be 8mb unless your sitting on the exchange.. but in this case 1/1.5mb is not "close" at all. Im jsut saying that i would looking to get a discount.

Nothing stopping him complaining though? How do you know that wont enforce it? if theres enough people complaining then they will sort it out.

Sure, try it. The worst that can happen is "fine, here's your MAC key".
Implying that there's some legal obligation to offer refunds because the speed isn't exactly what's advertised is complete rubbish though.

How do you know that wont enforce it?

Because it's already been tried with ISPs who traffic shape/cap/throttle/everything else.
The ASA prefers that the ISPs self-regulate their own web sites, so they won't interfere. If the product has been mis-sold then there's some recourse for complaint, but there's no evidence of that.
Regardless, an eighth isn't exactly disastrous.

if theres enough people complaining then they will sort it out.

Yeah right.

the speed is never going to be the same as advertised, as ive said. but it has to be up to some reasonable service level or you have a right to complain.

so if there are 1000's of people all with the same problem all paying for this "up to 8mb" service and only recieveing 1/2mb there jsut going to let it go? i dont think so.

For a shared consumer service, 1Mbps is reasonable.

There are thousands getting <2Mbps out of IPStream Max products, and there's no sign of anything changing, so I do think so.
If the ASA or Ofcom, or anyone else for that matter, want ISPs to provide even 50% of the advertised speed to everyone, you can expect to see prices increasing considerably.

We obviously have different ideas on what is a reasonable service for the money we pay. I would never pay full price for 1/8 of service.

Ideally everyone would get their "8mbit", but its tech (i.e. old copper phone lines) that holds it back, nothing the ISP can do.

It would be nice to have 8Mb BB but I'd be happy with anything over 1Mb!

The most annoying thing for me is I'm an IT geek with a 1Mb connection while my mate who hates comuputers but wants the fastest connection available is surfing the web on a Virgin 20Mb jobbie. There's no justice in the world!!!

What's an eighth of any number between 0 and 8? Oh wait, there's no correct answer. No provider in this country sells "guaranteed 8Mb ADSL", it's always "up to". You'd only be able to complain if you got more than 8Mb :p
