I've only been driving again for a few months after years away. So oil is quite pricey, 5L for around £30-40, although I think you only need a couple of changes per year. I've seen the extact same 5L of oil, 5W40, for £15 on ebay with free shipping, so are we being ripped off, the ebay selling has good ratings also?

The last top-up bottle of oil I bought from Tesco as they had it on offer (Castrol Magnatec) at half price.

I'd be dubious buying from the net unless it was a trustworthy seller.

I buy from Opie Oils and use one of several different discount codes from various YT channels to get another 10% off. Price for the £6 litres I need varies from £28 for Fuchs Titan up to £52 for Castrol Magnatec. I tend to go for the Fuchs at £28 or Mobile Super 2000 for £32 (pre-discount), so pretty much the prices you are stating in the OP. I don't mind paying this much, even with 3-4 oil changes a year as it's an older turbod car and I want good quality oils in there.

OpieOils itself has affiliations and partnerships with some suppliers and not with others - which is why the Fuchs and Mobil stuff is reasonably priced relative to other sources, whilst the Magnatec is pretty much RRP.

I just stick to OEM then I know it's going to be fine (I think Toyota use shell for their engine oils). It's not really any cheaper buying something else.

Weirdly you find a lot of stores on ebay who are selling stuff cheaper there than on their own site. With free shipping also.

Always buy from specialists so you know what is correct. Saab gets GM dexos 2 fully synth which is cheap at £20 for 5 liters from Neobros (Leading Saab specialist). Suzuki uses the same oil. Celica has Fuchs Titan 10w50 as I do track it. Bought from Opie.

ebay last 10% all off
Fuchs Titan Supersyn SAE 5W40 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil - 10 Litres / 10L
Payment
£35.96 GBP

Buy from opie also - 10 litres of the good stuff is normally about 100 quid and I have a litre or so left for top ups :)

The price goes down quite sharply if you can buy in larger quantities, though you do have to have the space for it,

20, 25 and even 60L drums are usually available. (As are 199L ones, though I doubt if many domestic users are going to be able to justify that sort of quantity, except that, for some grades/specs you can get good quality oil for less than £1.50/L buying in those quantities, and provided you store it right Oil doesn't really go off)

Separation of the additives from the base oil over time?

Interesting thought, but not one I have heard of. I would have thought the main problem would be water absorption, so long term storage would need to be in an airtight container.

With the smaller containers one could always give them a shake or roll them around a bit from time to time. But I accept that would be a bit tricky for the 199L drums. :p

Opie Oils for the specific fully synthetic stuff I use on our Punto.

The MX5 only needs 10W40 semi-synthetic so I just buy a decent brand when I see it for a decent price. Normally this ends up being Castrol from Asda.
