Where do you download your brain code?

I am a big fan of the brain-as-a-computer metaphor. At conception your parents mix up a bunch of code to form the physical, unique you (sexy right?). Some stuff comes naturally, like your heart beating or remembering to breath, but the rest is learned code - monkey see monkey do style - till we reach the apex of oh so clever super smart modern man.

At first, your parents and close friends/family control the code that gets downloaded in to you. Soon enough, you go to school and start getting code from different sources, some good, some not so good. At some point, you end up the big wide world, free to make your own choices, free to choose the code that gets put into your brain.

But where do you go?

Everything you are exposed to in your everyday existence is code that is affecting who you are and the person you will become. How many people leave their moral fate up to chance, or linger in a bad place for too long. Would it not be better to choose good code sources?

/meta rant

Lately I have become a big fan of the podcast medium as a way to tap into a healthy information resource I can consume while going about everyday activities. An episodic weekly download of interesting information on random topics to broaden my horizons and defeat ignorance.

Highlights include Ted Talks, Stuff You Should Know from How Stuff Works, Infinite Monkey Cage, Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders etc etc.

So good folks of GD, where do you get your good code? Where are good places to hang out to become better people?

I'm rather against this, because the brain is the part of the body where you have manifest. (I refuse to say 'soul' as I don't want to turn this into a religious debate).

So, a scientist creates a brain, either electronically or a mixture of bio and electronically. Does that brain now have manifest?

Someone copies or download a brain. What happens to the manifest in the original and copied brain?

Someone gets teleported. Atoms deconstruct at the original pod and reconstruct at the destination pod. Does the brain in that person still have manifest or have the manifest gone to someone else?

Books - I read for at least one hour, daily
NY Times - Opinion section
BBC Future
Newscientist.com

That being said, I believe a more suitable metaphor for the brain is a bee hive. Millions of cells, working together indepedantly, yet in unison, for a common cause - survival. "You" are simply an illusion which exists to increase the chances of survival of the hive mind. :D
A computer is a glorified abacus and, in its current binary form, it will never be anything like the brain. :p

Why not write your own?

Why not build a skyscraper?

Because there is already a perfectly good skyscraper over there that gets the job done. While you are sweating over the foundations of the skyscraper you probably wont finish, ill be sitting in my air conditioned penthouse suite getting on with my life.

I write my code, team writes and debugs for me. This goes not compute..... error.... exterminate....

Yeah but when my skyscraper is finished it will be better than yours :D. It will be full of models, tons of cash and bigger than yours. Therefore worth the effort :p

I download my mind mods at the parlour. 500 ucus for a skull gun implant is pretty schway. All vits intro, no downtime from sticking up the glitterfolk and dodging pig rigs and badge boppers.
