Where do you get really good laptops from?

How about just buying a eATX case with say a 20" CRT, buying the best parts money can buy (im thinking an AMD 4X4 system), and say about 9 UPS's.... Carry all that around with you, just spray paint the word LAPTOP on it.

I never understood why anyone would buy a 19/7" laptop, the thing weighs 20kg, runs for abuot 5 minutes and could melt the polar ice caps.

But if you still don't care, how about a Toshiba? You can get a tablet one too! There is always a VIAO, but they look stupid.

Someone who thinks alike! I can't begin to comprehend people who want such a large laptop unless they're basically looking for a 'portable desktop', in which case what you described would be more appropriate :D lol

HP DV9288

I have one being delivered tomorrow. core2duo, 2gig ram, 320gig hard drive, Vista Home Premium, 17" screen.

I spent around 3 months looking for a decent laptop and researched everything everywhere - in the end i went for MacBook Pro. Sweet piece of kit and it really is a good investment! Very pricey i know but well worth it.

any good for games? ^

i am not a big gamer but i have fired up xp on bootcamp and it seems to run very well but where top end graphics are required its probably a different story. There are other guys on here use them for some gaming so maybe they could help more.

I've got an Evesham Quest Nemesis, which is a 17" SLI laptop with two 7900GS graphics cards. Being Evesham it's not too expensive, and believe me you get great performance considering it's a laptop. It's also got 200GB hard drives running in raid 0 (for performance).

It's basically the same machine as the Alienware 9700, but quite a bit cheaper,

I faced this same dilemma this week, i had narrowed it down from either rock or dell, and ended up going for the XPS 1710.

I managed to haggled a good £600 off the laptop to get basically the top of range with all the gubbins, 2.33 6700 processor, 7950GTX graphics, 2gb ram, 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive, xps carrycase, gen2 backcover, the whole shooting match.

you wont be disappointed :D Only real weakness of it is perhaps the keyboard (feels a little flimsy at times) You can switch off the led lights from the bios if you want btw.

Also co-recommend a Zepto (considered them, a HP nc8430 and a Amilo xi1546 before getting the xps1710)

Blimey, I had considered the XPS, who did you haggle with? Dell direct?
