Where do you go from M3?

C63 AMG? It's a sideward step but when it comes to these type of cars that's not a bad thing.

Personally I'd go for the Porsche mentioned by Gibbo above.

I've had my E92 M3 for about 4.5 yrs now and have got the itch to change. I test drove a C63S as I really thought it might appeal. The engine is an absolute peach, but beyond that as a car it is difficult not to be left disappointed after an M3.

I agree Porsche or maybe GTR is the way to go.

I ha da friend's Cayman S for a few days and I was online ready to trade up my M3...the Porsche is slower on paper but it sure puts a smile on your face!

I suspect however, like him, I will end up with a new M3 :)

Just keep the M3 for regular satisfaction, and get something a little more skeleton for special occasions?

That would be my choice anyway, as I don't think other cars would have the same character of an N/A M3.

If he's tempted by an f80 then let him go there, he likes M3's and why not? For what they are - as all rounders - little compares.

I can't exactly stop him, it's just banter between friends. Porsche has come out top every time we chat about it, but it was all about a 997 turbo at the time. But they are now on the increase.

His m3 doesn't do much mileage. It's a weekend car really. Due to this I think it's worth about the same now as it was two years ago.

It seems a tricky end of the market. You're about as fast as you can reasonably go before needing super car kinda money.

Budget wise I'd expect 40k at a push.

991 C2S or C4S, on paper it looks no quicker than a E9x M3, but trust me they are a much quicker road car and more capable. :)

As Gibbo says, E92 M3 to a 991 C2S is a perfect step up and is the switch I did after 2 years of M3 ownership, although it falls outside of his £40k budget. In that money, not too sure what's available, can you even get a decent 997 C2S for sub £40k?

Tell him to try driving an M4 before he commits as he might not enjoy it, I didn't.

I have two mates who got M4's without much of a test drive, both moved the car on in short time, well one was an M3 and one an M4, though same car technically just different door layout.

I was going to put this in my last post but then refrained.

I had an M4 for the day back in 2014 and I must say from an E92 I was not too impressed. It has a lot of power low down in the form of torque, so your able to utilise the power more rather than having to gun it, but the sound is atrocious, the handling lacking and overall not a great car to drive. It didn't make me smile like the E92 does.

Having said all of that, I will need a 4-door car very soon and apart from a C63 I don't really see anything of similar budget that will get me similar performance.

E90 M3 (older one) still has the smile-v8, so could look for one of those surely?

Actually the low down torque was also quite an issue with the driving experience, it causes traction issues out of corners, fun at first but quickly becomes annoying, in the wet the handling is really not great at all, just like BMW what the hell did you do here.

But yes the noise is totally junk, garbish, poo, terrible, really not good. Big shame!

Like others E9x is preferred and E46 still remains a master class in the handling department, such a fluid chassis. For me the M4 is more about straight lines and toys inside. Handling and sound is a step backwards for me on the road.
