How do you guys know what components to recommend when people come asking for specs?

Are there any decent sites with info on all the latest components and stuff?

These forums and RL friends

maybe im being funny but didnt you guys learn yourselves? e.g. got your first pc played doom, upgraded the pc, then decided network'd etc?
i know for things like the latest graphics cards you check them out via reviews online, but i mean basic things like installing graphics cards or memory or perhaps a cpu. those things you cant really have a website setup for it.

Yep. I learnt when my Dad used to pay for computers. If I broke it I knew I wouldn't be paying for it. :p

After enough playing around then asking people when I came unstuck I figured mosrt of it out. It's pretty much like lego though, or was back in the day. It's a tad more complicated now, but only a tad. :)

I used to know, I used to be able to quote very good specs. But I grew tired of it and now, at a guess I'd end up speccing possibly the worst PC in history, some mustard powered computer with a high-five mechanism. Actually, that would be one of the best.

Generally I just pick up information from the various forums here with occasional forays to hardware review sites etc that are most often linked to by someone else. It isn't particularly hard as I find that once I've got a basic knowledge I can supplement it pretty easily. If I were to stop coming to OcUK then I'd probably need to start reading magazines again and even then it isn't such a broad spectrum of opinions.

if i'm thinking of buying an item i will search in google for reviews of that item and then go from there
