Where do you place your monitor? (infront, side or?)

Hey all

Been to see a Chiropractor about my back

and it has now made me more aware about how I sit and the location of my screen

I used to have my monitor and the corner of my desk because its further away from my eyes, but I have just moved it so now its almost directly in front of me, but I now feel I am too close to it

I have a 22" widescreen LCD attached to a vesa mount that's bolted to my desk with an extension arm

I am thinking about down sizing my monitor because of this, and not sure I want to do so, so what do you guys do ?

A lot of variables there.

Firstly from my experience I am dead against having the monitor to the side, I did't have any serious problems but definitely had some tension in my neck because of it.

Secondly, people will have many varying opinions on size, personally can't see how a 22 is too big but to each their own.

I have my 27 inch mounted on the wall directly in front of me at eye level and that is just the sweet spot for me personally.

I briefly had a 32 in front and thought it was too big yet there are people on here who will swear by sitting right in front of their 32 inch monitor so horses for courses size wise.

For your 22 to be too close you must have a very shallow desk no?

You shouldn't have any issues using a 22" 50cm or so away from you. I use a a 24" monitor and a 27" iMac screen at work and both feel comfortable to use sitting on the desk infront of me. If it's uncomfortable and you have space under your desk you could always look at getting a pull out keyboard and mouse tray.

screen is around 50cm away from me, just feels too close

and I hate pull out keyboards I cant game like that, too cramped :p lol

(I have very long arms)

Sounds like you need a new desk to me. For a 22 inch screen, I'd personally want to have my eyes about 90cm away from the top bezel.

I would like that sort of depth

I looked online last night and most of them are like mine (600mm) or up to 800mm

but with the amount of stuff in my room, its not easy getting a bigger desk

I don't have a double bed sized room, and I have my bed, 40" TV with hifi etc, big wardrobe, and my big cupboard for storage along with 2 DVD racks !!

I am now thinking of ways to move things around, and "perhaps" getting a corner desk (if I can get it to all fit) that way it may have a longer viewing distance to the screen ?

We use 800mm desks at work, and seem to be okay for the majority of people (80+ people) - everyone is different though. Short of custom making something though, I think you will struggle to find many desks that are deeper.

Be careful with corner desks, as mostly they are L-shape rather than corner, and have specific seating positions e.g. cut outs that face forwards or to the side rather than diagonally at the corner (if that makes sense).

If it's any consolation, I have 4 Monitors on my L-Shaped desk at work - struggle to get a comfortable seating position to look at any of them :D

Instead of going out and buying a new desk that may end up not being suitable, you could try and pull the desk out from the wall and adjust your mount so the monitor is behind the desk, and then adjust to see what distance suits you before buying a deeper desk.

Just to save the possibility of returning a desk :)

funny you should say that, I have just done that

From the edge of my desk to the wall is 700mm now, the screen sits out of the wall by 120mm, does feel better that its further away

ill pull it out some more and measure it all up if the desk was a 800mm depth desk

Good stuff, I have a 800mm deep desk at the moment which has my computer at the back left corner, and then three 24" monitors in front of that. I reckon my middle monitor is about....550mm away from the front of the desk, maybe a bit less which is awesome!

If I didn't have my computer on the desk then I could push everything back a bit more but cable management with it being on the floor would be a nightmare. I might give it a blast one day.

are those monitors on stands or a VESA mount ?
my monitor is 580mm from the front of my desk for my 22"

I have a corner desk linnmon, aldis ikea combo and to start with I was sitting with an arched back which started to give me signs of trouble so I moved everything closer to me so I could keep my back straighter and my arms bent. It has already helped but I need a better chair as my current ikea egg thing is not very supportive of the back at all.

Great desk for a triple monitor arrangement which is where I want to go with my current setup.
