where is computing going?

Professional as in ?

Companies.

There are two markets, home and professional. Home market, is moving towards more integrated and smaller handheld technology.

Cloud will probably have a role to play in both markets, although I'd imagine the home market would be the bigger benefactor? That's open to debate though.

See my edit you filthy ninja. ;)

BOOM.

Education (Tablets/Laptops)
Accountancy (Laptops/Tablets)
Banks (SFF)
Shops (SFF)

The desktops are going that's for sure very slowly but they are. The power hungry businesses are moving to Apple iMacs / G5's that I know of.

Still use desktop's in all of the Schools I visit?

Graphic design companies, architects, game development?

SFF = Small form factors? ... which is what I've said? They're just littler computers are they not?

I think for users who just want browsing/email e.t.c then obviously tablets will be common more and more common. For people who need their computer to actually do somethineg though....

Know many businesses?

The BBC are using them quite a lot.... Most of the journalists, if you watch f1 you'll notice jake Humphrey is constantly walking around with a tablet....

I also know that some companies are now offering substantial discount on them to a lot of their managerial Employees. No idea why....

But i agree that most tablets aren't yet powerful enough to do a lot of the basic excel etc... Stuff that is useful in most industries... The processing power isn't really there yet.

I would say that for the majority of businesses Desktops will be dead. Laptops will take over completely.

there will always be certain businesses that will require desktops for high performance applications, but they will be the minority.

tablets I don't think will ever be able to replace a laptop/netbook unless its done via a docking station.

Tablets are still computers, laptops are still computers just in a different style.

I was talking specifically about desktop computers. SFF are just smaller desktop computers.

You might see quite a few people at the BBC on tablets, but you see more if not as many on laptops doing minute by minute reports at football games

I think it's good though been able to dock a tablet. It's a real shame Apple never come up with that as a solution like the Asus Transformer.
