I'm looking to either get a full bundle mobo / cpu / ram, or identify something that will give me a big gain.

Is my CPU severely affecting performance or is the 970 a little dated now?

I'm a gamer, so PUBG, Overwatch and so on.

My current setup:

i7 2600k @ 4.4GHZ O/C
GTX 970 @ 10-15% O/C
16GB RAM

Thank you

youd see about 10 fps from going to latest gen intel or pending . 3rd gen onwards theres not much gains to be had as only little changes took place in the designs .

biggest would be GPU as stated above ^^^^^ 1070 or Vega 56 and you'll be flying - depending on if your monitor is freesync or g-sync or neither

1080 would be a great upgrade, I just went from a 980 to a 1080 @ 1440p and its running great. :)

Dont expect 144fps on Ultra settings though.

I'd oc the CPU to 4.7 or 4.8 depending on how bad or how good you have done in the silicon lottery. Consider upgrading the GPU to a 1070 or 1080, and then upgrading the entire platform when coffee lake comes out and get yourself a 6 core i7. Or wait for ice lake and get an 8 core i7.

I ran my 2600K at 1.4V 4.8Ghz from 2011 to 2016 when I swapped it out for a 4790K I found at a suspiciously low price. No issues. They can really take the volts, if you have good cooling. I did have to drop down to 4.7Ghz at the beginning of 2016 as my OC got shaky but you can't complain about an OC that is solid for 5 years.

If you're willing to put up with obscene fan noise, you can get a hell of a lot more than 10 or 15% oc out of most 970's.. btw.

Definitely don't upgrade to Ryzen right now as you won't see much gain in gaming. You want to stick with Intel and wait for the hex core mainstream stuff. Better yet wait for the 8 core mainstream stuff. Due in 1 month and a year and change, respectively.

I run a 1080 @ 1440P and I can run even demanding stuff like BF1 at between 90 and 120 FPS. It's a great GPU. Some stuff FLIES at the screens max refresh at ultra like Overwatch and Doom 2016. Alien Isolation also flies at max refresh at ultra. Shadow of Mordor too. Lots of others.
