The daughter of Dubai's ruler who tried to flee the country in 2018 later sent secret video messages to friends accusing her father of holding her "hostage" as she feared for her life.

In footage shared with BBC Panorama, Princess Latifa Al Maktoum says commandos drugged her as she fled by boat and flew her back to detention. The secret messages have stopped - and friends are urging the UN to step in.

Dubai and the UAE have previously said she is safe in the care of family. (LINK)
People really ought to consider this imprisonment without trial when they think of visiting Dubai for a holiday; the UAE and its Rulers are a 21st Century disgrace

Cheap? Dubai?
Don't need to be a high roller to afford a 300quid return flight on the mega bus equivalent of an aircraft plus a few hundies on all inclusive hotel.

Anyone spending more to go to Dubai needs to assess their values as well. Total manufacturerd experience with zero culture. Better off going to benidorm at least you can share a hotel with your mates and not get accused of being gay :D

Brits won't pay any attention to this. Their priority will always be a cheap winter sun.

Some might, the place is basically a big polished turd, modern infrastructure, a blind eye turned re: beaches, alcohol within hotels or ex-pat communities/private homes etc... drugs and prostitution even (though highly risky for those involved in running that if they fall foul of the wrong person)... but it is still a country ultimately run by backwards people.

Sensible ex-pats have an escape option and are ready to ditch their cars at the airport and flee if things are about to turn sour - various people have ended up in prison because business deals have gone wrong or relations with an employer have turned sour - if you end up in debt or bounce cheques then that can be quite serious... thus people flee the country and never return.

If you're on holiday then generally there is less risk - technically it is illegal for you to drink etc.. but in reality no one is going to enforce the law unless you draw attention to yourself in a bad way, then it is an additional charge they can throw at you.

I thought this was old news, why is it being brought up again in the media?

Local bad news/outrage stories are getting stale.

Digging up an obscenely rich and powerful Sheikh locking up his daughters gives people something to have a toothless moan about.

Then because he's essentially untouchable the story will die again until another slow news day.

Because she managed to sneak out a video message from her imprisonment stating that she is not being looked after by family and is instead a prisoner without even access to fresh air - a statement which has made an utter fool of the ex Irish President Mary Robinson who visited her in captivity in 2018 and said she was fine except for being a troubled young woman.

I knew someone that drove their lambo to the airport and ditched it leaving the country never to return.

And it was over cheques. Very respectable person as well.

Place is an immoral **** hole
