Where should I go in Europe for a 3 night photography trip?

I need to get away.

I'm very close to booking a trip to Rome. Have already short listed hotels. But before I book I'm asking myself is there anywhere else I should be considering within Europe for a 3 night trip?

I'm open to suggestions!

Europe has a lot of abandoned buildings and sites that look amazing in the right light. Decay is something we photograph a lot and have an EU road trip coming up next month. Belgium and France have their fair share of places and you can capture images that go against the usual landmark pictures people come back with.

Worth investigating further because Eurotunnel tickets + insurance + breakdown cover works out at less than £100 per car so repeat trips aren't out or reach year round :)

Steve, I just did a 3 night trip.
Flew into Rome, then onto Florence by train and finally to Venice by train then flew back from there. Got some good shots and got to see quite a fair bit of Italy, would thoroughly recommend. Warning though, take a tripod and a big stop ND if you don't want to get the mass of crowds in your shots!
I would have liked to of done it on 6 days but it's doable in 3

Paris did come to mind, but I think I fancy something that's a little beyond the door step.

MRK - The roadtrip thing does sound a good idea. I just don't think my RX8 is the ideal roadtripping vechile though. It likes to drink!

Hi sHo0sh, thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. :)

Which ND filter do you recommend?

I think lugging around a tripod may get on my nerves. I can't see myself carrying around my RedSnapper over there, probably wouldn't make it on to the plane with it! Wondering if a GorillaPod is the answer?

Barcelona is supposed to be quite good. Although I'm not entirely sure, and will get back to everyone on that after I go this summer :p

I've heard Krakow is a good one as an outside shout that probably isn't that mentioned...

I'm going to Prague, Vienna and Budapest this summer. These all look like amazing places to take some snaps!

Will get back to you when I get back

Depends what you are after, you didn't explictly say a city so have you thought of some places for landscape and wildlife? NW scotland is great this time of year, as is the Alps with flowers in the meadows and white snowy peaks - check out Salzburg as a way of combing a city and alpine, also plenty of options in Switzerland with a cheap easyjet flight to Geneva (Zermatt, Grimentz, zinal, leysin, ovronaz, grindlewald, etc, etc.)

Rome over Paris for me.

Florence would be nice too.

Agreed :D Florence is beautiful, and I could spend all day in the Duomo.

See my "Rome!" thread for the kind of thing you can expect to see there. I wish I'd had a tripod to do some night shots (I'm told the Trevi fountain is beautifully lit and not busy at night), but the main issue I faced there was getting crowds out of the shot (again, a big stopper and tripod would have been handy). The entire city is just beautiful, I could have spent another week there so I could pop into more of the beautiful churches and side streets.

How about the old Yugoslavia (Bosnia, Croatia etc). Some of the photos I've seen from there are quite stunning. It's a place I would like to visit.

Did you do much shooting, a thread anywhere on it? I've become really interested in Roman History in the last few months triggered by books and it's snowballed from there. I can use my staff travel and go to Rome for some pics, unsure how long to go for.

Any advice?

Here's my thread from my trip a few weeks ago. I'm sure Ray will come out with some amazing stuff to make mine look terrible :p, but it gives you an idea of what you can expect to see.

Like you, the history of the place was the main attraction for me, and the centro 'storico is just saturated with it. There is just no end to things to shoot, read about, explore. I spent nearly a week there and I could have spent another there to explore all the beautiful little churches dotted around after doing all the main tourist stuff.

Although I only took a point and shoot, there is a lot of Portugal that is a very picturesque. Also their motorway system is very good, if you hire a car you can really see a lot. Have a look at Obidos, Batalha Monastery, Coimbra, Lisbon and the beaches around these regions.
