Where the heck do I start? New PC

I have to agree with sweols, buy yourself an external Blu-ray drive such as this one - link and get a nicer case.

I've seen the NXT Phantoms in the Overclockers stores and to say they're plastic fantastic is an understatement! They certainly don't look like a hundred quid case...

I had a feeling the DVD / Blu ray would be an issue. Really don't want an external drive (and I do use it).
I am not a mad online gamer, so the Wifi isn't going to be an issue on that front. Getting a cable to the dining room (where this will live) is almost impossible.
We have a huge red/black gaming rig (my wifes) in the living room. Thought I would be nice to go with something different.
Maybe a case change? I know the drive was cosmetically incorrect (its black), but I could easy fix that. But if it doesn't fit... then no point.
It looked like a longer burner case would fit, looking at the photos. Oh well

If you aren't a mad gamer, do you perform very demanding tasks such as calculations, 3d imaging? If not, x99 build is a total overkill and you'd better off going i5 4th or 5th gen.

Cable? Get a contractor in and pay him to draw it.. like I said it'll be a lot better longterm... Nothings impossible.

Anyways, at the end of the day. You've to look at the case day in and day out. If you like that one, buy it... There are a lot of better valued cases, like mentioned above several times.

Good luck

I video edit and write computer code mainly.
I am an AV electrician - so getting the cables in isn't a problem! ... you know what its like working on your own house.
I want the ability to get into gaming. This will not be getting upgraded or changed any time soon after its built, so I want to get a decent system and not regret spending that little extra to start with.

Pain in the backside is that m basket is empty and I have to sit and refill it again!

That last case Micky looks ok - Will the burner will fit that?

The spec is fine then man dont let us keep suggesting stuff or your gonna end up up with a binned 5960x quad sli titan x system with 128gb of ram and a intel nvme 1.2tb ssd and a superflower 2000 watt powersupply with liquid thermal paste in a massive custom loop with the most expensive fluid available with 200 Linus tech tips noctua fans mounted and ductaped all across the case with cherry mx red 500 pound gaming key board and 10 4k monitors lol The builds good as is :).

Ha... well isn't that half the fun?

I know roughly what I want, but the suggestions from you guys helps greatly.

The monitor is a bit of an unknown (no reviews on OC)... I will have a Google.
I will post a final (bet it isn't!) spec and see if anyone can spot any errors.

Going to change a few bits (like the cooling fans) and then hopefully be just about there.

Looks pretty good to me, there's not much you can do to bring the cost down.

X99 absolutely the best value, but there's a difference between objective and subjective value. If you're never going to take advantage of the extra performance, a £50-75 additional expenditure is a waste regardless of bang-for-buck on paper.

I'd strongly suggest you consider a 27" 1440p IPS rather than the 29" ultrawide. That means giving up FreeSync, sure, however for most games I'd take the extra tearing in order to get the higher resolution (and that's coming from someone who uses G-Sync on a daily basis).

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,820.64
(includes shipping: £15.90)

Its not the final shopping basket.... we all know it.
So many shiney cases.... so little time. Still highly likely the Blu-ray won't fit in this case either.

Monitor... been reading reviews. Freesync is apparently better than G-Sync.
But, its hard to keep games set up within the 48-75Hz Freesync range for it be to effective.

If I got a 27" 1140p IPS... then Freesync/Radeon becomes irrelevant and I could go back to my favourites - Nvidia (lets not step backwards again)

I do like the option that Freesync monitors have.... 2x separate inputs onto the same display. This mean I can pipe my 3d printer laptop onto the display as well as my main PC.

As for the cost.... sorry OC, you are expensive. I can trim a lump off the cost buying some of the components elsewhere. Would be a shame, as I like OC.
Example - I can get the case for £99, PSU for £85 etc.

They may be cheaper, but I doubt they have the same excellent customer support and aftersale support as OcUK.

I know cases are personal preference, but I wouldn't pay £100 for that Aerocool.

The Phanteks Enthoo Pro/Luxe or Fractal R5 are better cases. They all support optical drives.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £330.75
(includes shipping: £20.82)

Items should stay in your basket until you delete them.

The Lian-Li cases around that price are good too if you want something understated. Won't get as much in terms of features or capacity but the build quality is second to none.

I don't know where you've been reading that FreeSync is better than G-Sync. FreeSync can be adopted by multiple vendors as it's just an implementation of the variable refresh rate specification as part of DisplayPort, and the monitors are cheaper, but that's about it. G-Sync is proprietary, yes, but if you buy a high refresh rate monitor with G-Sync, you know the G-Sync range is going to extend to the monitor's highest refresh rate. There's also stuff about latency however in practice there isn't a difference really.

Unless you have a specific need I'd stick with the 390X in that build, purely because you're getting better performance for less cash.

Others may be able to provide input on this, but I've found that even with G-Sync, <55fps or so still feels pretty horrible (that said, maybe that's just me - I always ensure my frame rate doesn't dip that low). From my experience it's the combination of high refresh rates and perfect frame syncing that makes variable refresh technologies shine.

Sticking with Freesync. Yes, the reviews for Freesync vs G-Sync favour the Freesync, but its marginal and personal preference I think.
So - sticking with the 390x

Cases. You can go around the trees and back with this stuff. The white cases I have been looking at are pleasing to look at - nothing more really. Tired of square edged dull boxes.

Some come with all the fans, some you need to buy extra.

I think we are probably about there now. Thanks for everyones advice - highly valued.

.... and no, everytime I leave the OC website, it loses the basket. Cookies are on, so no idea why
