Where the hell do I start?

I would go for an AMD 780G solution personally.

Coupled with a low wattage Dual Core, 45w or lower of they exist and a single stick of either 1 or 2GB of RAM.

Plus Any of the Ubuntu derivatives, should make a good system.

Trunks, this is what I've had in mind myself after discussions with some of the chaps over at silentceview.com.

What speed RAM will I need? Doesnt really matter does it - 4200?

I am trying to work out which runs coolest but am strugglning.

As long as it is rated at 1.8v i do not think that its going to make any difference that you should pay attention to really. Bog standard PC2 6400 with standard timings (5-5-5-18) should do the trick i think, if i am not misatken the bulk of these are sold without heatsinks, if you can get some witha heatsink on you should be covered.
