Where the hell is NAVI???????????

But why would Sony throw time and money at AMD's last GCN hurrah, knowing that something much more modern is coming a year later.

It's all about timeframes and release windows, if it's possible then it will be done but if not then it won't. Sony know *exactly* when they want to realse the 5, and if AMD can produce next-gen tech by then all good but if not then it's current stuff. This was all worked out months/years ago of course, these things can't be cooked up in a minute.

Also backwards compatibility with the previous generation of consoles. When the new PlayStation comes out the PS4 Pro will be cost reduced and serve as the entry level model like the PlayStation 4 does currently.

It also means the devs can work with two similar GPU uarchs instead of different ones.

TBH,I think the biggest improvements will be down to the much stronger CPUs in the new consoles.

Well, ask yourself: why would Sony pay AMD (and work with them) to polish the aging turd that is GCN, when AMD have a brand new ground-up architecture coming straight after?

Seems more likely that Sony would work with AMD on their new architecture, not their ancient one.

It's a good Q with 3 possible answers. Either Sony put out a PS5 and a PS5 X. Or PS5 is only released with Achturus hardware, not Navi. Or Navi drops GCN entirely, although the leak says otherwise.

I think it's the second answer Sony drops the PS5 when Achturus is released. And Navi is the stopgap for AMD to compete with Turing.

I think Sony will be more than happy going with Navi if it offers the level of graphics performance they're happy witht, doing so will both save them money and be the safer bet because beyond GCN is an unknown at the moment, They don't really care about using the latest and greatest like a PC gaming enthusiasts does, They know GCN & when Arcturus finally lands it'll likely take the AMD driver team a while to get used to the new architecture as they'll still be supporting GCN so adding the new one will stretch team resources & getting the drivers up to scratch will take time, Is anyone expecting flawless driver support out the box cause I'm not? It'll be the same for Sony's software team & the game developers too, look back at how things were with a lot of the games when they released the PS4, They won't want both their own software team & the game developers having to learn everything again, With Sony talking about making PS4 game disks compatible with PS5 games** adding another architecture to the mix wouldn't be the smartest of moves. I think Arcturus will be PC only in the beginning and we'll be used as testers, I can't see Sony or Microsoft taking the risk of going with a completely new gpu architecture when Navi offers the level of performance they'll need. I'm happy to be wrong though.

** If true

As for Microsoft they might leave it another year or more before replacing the X-box One X so if they do maybe they'll use Arctutus,

The cpu was a recognisable weakness from the start, Assassins Creed Unity had issues because of the cpu.
