Hi,
Am totally new to photography, only just recently got my Canon 400D and really enjoying it.
Have just finished reading Bernie's Better Beginner's Guide to photograhy ( http://www.berniecode.com/writing/photography/beginners/ ) and he mentions a few items which I would consider purchasing but I'm not sure where would be the best/cheapest place to buy these stuff and what features would make them good. I hope you guys can help me out a bit.

Firstly, filters, polarizing and ND, how much do these cost? And what makes a good filter?
Secondly, a tripod, again what makes a good tripod and how much am I looking to pay for a decent beginner one.
And lastly, macro dioptres, he said we should go for the Canon/Nikon dioptre ones, how much are these and where to buy? Are these a better option than using extension tubes?

Any info would be grately appreciated.

Michael

Any shop that sold that sort of kit would almost certainly be a competitor, so where's to buy kit is out of the question although what to buy isn't...

hey, i thought this thread had been closed.

Bog: thanks for the link, interesting discussion there about filters. I don't think I'll bother with one lol.

Hey Michael, i just got a 400D too and am thinking the same! be good to compare pics as i like you am just starting out really!

For ND filters the two main brands are Cokin and Lee, Lee being far more expensive than the Cokin but without the supposed 'colour cast' of the Cokin. I'm looking in to which and what to buy at the moment but don't really know that much about filters so any links explaining would be brilliant. :)

Tripod wise Manfrotto are generally regarded as the tripod to get but are pretty expensive. Velbon do some good cheaper tripods and it may be worth looking at them. Remember though that most tripods don't come with a head (the bit you attach the camera to) so make sure you budget in for one.

I would go for extension tubes instead of dioptres, you can get a basic manual set for about £10 and it won't reduce the picture quality as there is no extra glass in them.

Bog: I'm more than happy to share some photos with you. Maybe we can share our beginner tips lol. If you use msn add me with mho [at] hotmail [dot]CO .UK
here are a few samples of my good ones, its like 3 out of over 200 shots lol.

The kit lens is poor really, and I am surprised canon have not addressed this. Perhaps it is all to do with cost !
Any why, try getting some used lens from aBay as that will cut you cost. If you want to buy new, check out sigma's 17-70 DI Macro lens as a standard lens replacment for the kit lens.

cheers Tyson, will do, looking at the canon 50mm 1.8 too...but it's good to get advice for a replacement for the standard lens
