Hi Ive been toying with the idea of getting a good gaming laptop but I dont know whats a good spec and where to buy it from ,
Ive been looking at alienware and rock because of the wide options they give you .

So any suggestions would be great.

Oh and I would rather steer clear of dell if possible.

Any reason you particularly dislike Dell?

Obviously you know they own Alienware, so I'm guessing you dislike their design?

I'm no big Dell champion, but I have an XPS M1710 and for the money I thought the spec and overall package was better than others were offering.

Whats your budget and what types of games do you play?

When I decide to upgrade, I will probably try Alienware (new Dell 1730 is ugly) as Rock don't seem to do SLI laptops.

I only dislike dell because of some bad dealings with them and yeah they are a bit ugly and no I didn't know they owned alienware ,
I was thinking of around £1200 give or take a couple of quid but that isn't fixed I may go higher if its worth the cash and it will give it an extra 5 minutes before being obsolete. :p
I will mainly use it for games (Crysis, supreme commander, bioshock) and mobile media (movies, music etc) so no office use really.
Ive been looking at mycizmo and they seem to be quite competitive and give a massive diversity on customizing which includes SLi and quad processors.

I think both Alienware or Rock would serve your requirements well, they are after all specialist gaming notebooks. I've not owned one myself but they do look like top-end machines so I would hope that the build quality and support is there too.

£1200 will get you a low/med end gaming machine from either company. Rock offer 3 year warranty as standard, where as Alienware only offer 1 year. Rock also have their forum which is a great help.

Rock do offer SLI, but it's in an obsolete 20" machine.

I think I may have to re-evaluate my budget as you pointed out £1200 doesnt get much.
maybe I should aim for £2000 area and just save my pennys for a little longer.

Well for £1300 I got - T72, 7950GTX, 2GB ram, 100GB HDD@7200, Vista Home

At the time this was pretty much entry level spec. This was 4-5months ago though.

Can't spec a Rock 770 with £1200. Entry level machine ([email protected] and a 8700) runs out at £1400 after tax.

2k will get you a top spec 770 with a 8800 and T95.

Shop around though, Rock isn't exactly the cheapest brand on the market.

yeah ive been looking around but I cant find many laptop builders who offer a decent spec like rock ,
Alienware are not very current on the tech and are a bit pricey and mycizmo seem ok but because of there amazing spec options I keep building a 3 grand lappy (In my dreams).

There are some manufacturers around like Rock, offering the same chassis with more options.. have a look at Kobalt, think it's the Mojave range. They seem to offer loads more options than Rock.. some decent upgrade prices too.

yeah if you compare kobalts top spec to the rock equivelant its nearly 200 quid cheaper I just wish there where more companys to choose from.

Take a look at the Toshiba Satellite X200

It sais on the spec sheet it has NVIDIA® SLI dual GeForce® 8600M GT.
Also a HD DVD drive.

wait for when the gateway p-6831fx comes to the UK, I got one here in the states for £741 it comes with an 8800M GTS. Even though the processor is crappy, the rest of the system is top notch, only slightly slower than the new rock.

When the p-6831fx comes to the uk it will blow all other out of the water for value for money, 17" high gloss screen (yeah ots only 1440x900, but higher res versions will be available at some point), 8lbs (light considering what it is packing), 250GB scorpio (with second HD bay for raid), T5500, 3GB Ram, 8800MGTS (only slightly slower than the 8800MGTX), 1.7" thick (quite thin in person). As I said mine cost me 741 pounds, after adding a T7500 and 320GB scorpio it cost me a cool 1000 points, and is litterally the second most powerful laptop you can buy on the market. The next closest thing is the ******** x80r for 1400 pounds, thicker and heavier though with higher res screen.

Realistically, all desktop 17" widescreens are 1440x900, and though I thought I would hate it, its quite decent. But yes I guess the res is a let down, there are higher res versions available but if you have a big desktop screen theres no point as you can just output to that. Though I have not seen a 17" screen with 1920x1200 I do have a 24" dell LCD and that res seems more suited for larger real estate screens, than diddy 17"ers.
