Hi all,

my pc has been the same for the last few years now. As it currently stands;

2500k - Stock
Gigabyte - z68xp ud3p
8gig corsair Vengeance
1tb ssd
evga superclocked 970

Now i just picked up an aio cooling kit on the cheap (kraken x41) - I currently have a cheap asus golden axe cooler I picked up years ago.

Now I'm trying to decide if a serious overclock on the 2500k is going to meet my needs enough. Or whether I should just bit the bullet and upgrade all (keeping the gpu for now).

Thanks

Honestly I would just get as high of an overclock as possible to eliminate any cpu limitation. You should be able to get 4.5-4.7 quite easily on sandy bridge. I would rather upgrade the GPU but you say you want to keep it so I'd just advice you to save for cannon lake coming at Q1 2018.

Well I had considered a GPU upgrade. But I assumed that even a heavily overclocked sandy would bottleneck something like a 1070. I would need to stay nvidia (Gsync is a must for me)

You should be fine for the most part with a 1070 its basically a 980ti. It's at the gtx1080 and onwards you'll start noticing some bottlenecking but then again these things bottleneck overclocked 7700k's in certain titles.

Thanks for the replies guys. What sort of overclock should I be looking with the kraken x41?

Just overclock the 2500k to start with, on my 3570k which is harder to cool because it has TIM instead of solder under the IHS I run 4.5Ghz @1.4v (High voltage but 4.6Ghz gives me WHEA errors and crashes BF1). With a Kraken you should be able to run 1.4v on that chip happily but just take it slow until you start to feel uncomfortable with temperature.

Ok thanks for the reply. It is interesting to hear about someone else's experience. Yea I felt the kraken was a good choice. I mean it is going to be a night and day difference from what I have. Which is basically useless for overclocking if I wanted to put any sort of real voltage through the chip. I'll let you know how I get on when the cooler arrives guys. I'm hoping for an improvement, especially in the min fps department!
