Where would you emigrate to?

All this talk of New Zealand is inspiring. I know nothing about the place.

In my mind, my dream home would be a high-tech beach house with all modcons, somewhere next to the sea with mountains and forests in the background. I'd start the day by getting up and going for a jog/swim. The mountains and forests are about an hour's drive away where I'd have a log cabin for when I wanted to stay there.

I've had a fascination with Japan myself for most of this decade so somewhere there would be good. I wouldn't fancy living in Tokyo. It's too big and too crowded. I don't know of any Japanese beach towns that are on a Shinkansen route for when one does fancy a trip to the big smoke. Where do the Japanese go for beach holidays apart from Okinawa?

I've thought about it. But I think I'd miss the English countryside and our awesome history and castles etc. Makes me sound a bit queer but I love grand old bulidings, and apart from a very few castles I've seen abroad nothing compares. The English country house with its little garden <3 *tears in the eyes* that St George's flag billowing out from the Vauxhall Astra speeding past. I love our countryside but hate what Labour have done to our country. London is so awesome.

Meh, enough of that, it's just because I'm in Madrid now that I feel like that.

OcUK spec me a country:

I speak perfect French, fluent Spanish, good Italian and the Queen's English.

I go to UCL doing French and Spanish (sucks ery much)

I want to go where there is a bitterly cold winter with lots of snow and where the houses are big and warm :D Mountains, lakes, forest, wildlife, fishing.... No 3rd world countries. Somewhere where I can buy a massive house with massive lands. Has to be a country where I can speak the language.

I loved living in Norway and would love to return. I love going to Canada. Anyone got any suggestions?

The Dude: How many points do I get for Canada's immigration? I have family who work in AB too atm. Im 20.

Thanks. All suggestions appreciated.
59 or thereabouts?

Australia or New Zealand for the weather/climate, Holland because they people are so bloody nice and coz I'm half-Dutch & would love to go there to learn the language and meet all my crazy relatives.

A lot of peeps are confusing a nice holiday abroad with the actual reality of living there, half of Europe want to come & live in the UK because of how they perceive it.
Once the reality hits them with the highest house purchase or rental costs, highest fuel tax, highest council tax etc. the list goes on. Many are returning to Poland.
A friend living in in Spain pays Council tax which is less than £200 a year.

I'll never score a job like mine again and i'd miss my freinds or I would have moved to france long ago.

If I had to move i'd move to the newark, i could carry on in my current job then i guess. America isn't as bad as england I guess, bar their government raping other countrys to provide for the people.

It is reasons like this we want to move, we are still researching NZ, neither of us have been there, but my wife does have a relative living in Wellington whom she talks to quite a bit..

New Zealand just seems a more sensible place, politics wise, the fuel isn't a rip off, there is no stamp duty or capital gains tax, the wages are comparatively lower, but so is the cost of living, then again, my wifes job out there is only £2000 less than here... without her overtime... so it's swings and roundabouts. Technology appears to be more expensive out there, Xbox's are ridiculous, the equivalent of £400 for an elite with no games...

It's a gamble, but we will try to make it work, if it doesn't we'll get NZ citizenship after a few years and move to Oz....

New Zealand (Auck) or failing that Australia (Melbourne or Sydney).

I am currently in the process of doing the internal transfer stuff at work. Will take a while, probably wont go until later this year even.

USA (east coast) Whats New York like? (might go there on holiday except i hate to fly)

Japan

Canada

Amsterdam

those interest me the most but ill try and go on holiday to each first. Only problem is i hate flying :/

Going against the grain, I've always fancied moving to somewhere like Switzerland, Austria or Finland. Bit cold I guess, but that wouldn't bother me. They seem to have a high quality of life from what I can gather and I think the scenery and change in ethic would be great. Language barrier might be a tad tricky though!

The taxes are fairly high in those countries from what I understand but the argument goes that you really see the benefits of it so perhaps it is more acceptable. The language barrier in Finland isn't too bad at least as most people under the age of about 35 speak near enough perfect English which is lucky because finno-ugric languages are a bit of a git to learn. Only speaking English would be rather less than ideal in a work situation but depending on the job and area you might get away with it. Scenery - well, I hope you like trees, lots and lots of trees. Some of the country is pretty spectacular but I'm really not joking about the trees.

Not so sure about Austria or Switzerland - D.P. lives in Switzerland though doing a PHD I think so he might be able to give a bit more information about there. :)

As title really, with this country getting worse, more expensive and the yob culture, where would you move to in the world?

Not sure if we could get a poll on this one please?:)

edit: oh and why?? :p

No worries, mate. I'm going back home to Australia in January 2009.

:)

I moved to Canada had the time of my life and never wanted to come back to this shut hole. Wife did and took our son. Had to come back also. Hate it here
