Where would you live

You'll need a working visa or a residents permit. This government site is a fantastic tool, though

ok ta for that. I think what I'm gonna do is get a masters for 2011 in Holland/Belgium/Germany as a sort of test bed to see if I can handle living on my own and away from family.

Then save 10k while apply for NZ jobs.

I guess my target would be to live in NZ by 33, with a wife by 35, and kids by 36.

Gash, thats quite old!

I can't think of just one. Anywhere out of the following would be fine for me :)

New England, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne.

Yeah, cheers for that :D.

In Singapore now. Don't see me staying here forever and have an agreement with my wife to move back to the UK to look after my parents as they get older (my wife has a brother and sister to care for her parents). I would not be surprise if we end up staying in the UK and that would be fine by me.

Somewhere outside of London with fairly easy commute. The area my parents live is not too bad, plenty of green, shops and fairly easy travel to central London.

If given the choice of anywhere in the world, what city/area would you move to
(the given area needs to have a job that you are suitably qualified for near-by though)

Realistically based on job requirements, Vancouver or Seattle.
Saying that any Swiss city is exceedingly highly rated for me.

Forgot that I didn't post where I'd live in the OP ...

Has to be the Los Angeles area for me, wouldn't really care where in it

I might be able to manage it if I get a good overall grade in my degree and a decent job to start with next year :D Plenty of automotive/mechanical companies located there, and plenty have UK/EU operations so international movement down the line is possible were I to work for their EU operation

EDIT: And this thread came about due to me spending the past 90min drunk and looking at LA on street view

If streetview is your only experience of LA then you will be most dispaointed. What a **** hole LA is. Try SF-bay area, much, much nicer.

Too many Brits and a
Lausanne is much livelier on a night out - but then i'm biased sicne I live in Lausanne.

Seriously, the i have seveal friend who live in Lasuanne and commute to Geneva because they much prefer living here.

Do you have a bigger chance of being allowed to live over there if you marry a Kiwi? :p

Yes. The Kiwi in the relationship essentially sponsors the other partner which means that you go for a resident's permit (permanent and I get dual nationality in 4 years) as opposed to a working visa (temporary although can become permanent, based on conditions, although I don't think you ever gain residency as a national). Any children gain dual nationality, if applied for. Our daughter at the age of 6 months had two passports and has dual nationality of Scottish and New Zealander.

It's a hugely complex subject and very time consuming and expensive. If you're serious about it then please ask away but bear this in mind if you're considering it :)

Thanks. :)

Not interested just yet in my life, although some time in the future would be great. My girlfriend's a Kiwi so I'm guessing that'd come in handy. :p

I've derailed this thread enough so I'll stop after this post. Having a Kiwi as your other half makes an absolute world of difference if you're ever considering living anywhere in NZ. Whilst the fees remain high and the paperwork tedious, the fact that you have a sponsor makes it permanent (unless you split up or divorce, I guess) than the typical working visa. After 5 years you become both a New Zealand citizen as well as a British one. This obviously opens up avenues into Australia and removes the need for visas etc.

Anyway, that's enough about NZ, hehe :o

You can't simply call LA a **** hole due to the size of it.
You have everything from Compton, to Pasadena to West Hollywood there, it has a mixture of EVERYTHING and is HUGE ... it's almost 80 miles from tip of San Fernando to the bit down past Irvine.

Looking at what sort of work is out there, the likely areas for work are Passadena, Santa Clarita, Torrence, Irvine, and so on

This.

I never been to such a horrible place, I stayed in Hollywood, the whole area is a complete dump, the people are all complete weirdos and the macdonalds security guards carry guns... nice huh!

Couldnt wait to leave.
