Hi, all I use my pc for is Games, watching TV, playing movies etc. Am I right in thinking any old 1TB drive will do me great and only the expensive ones are needed for people who do raid etc?

I've got 4 X 1TB Spinpoint F1 drives all running perfectly (touchwood!) after defecting from my Seagate loyalty! They are fast and extremely quiet.

:)

The western digital 1TB is faster and the samsung f1 1tb seems to have quite a lot of failures so if you can afford i'd go for the 1TB western digital, the samsung is quite a bit cheaper if you are on a budget.

To be fair, you only hear of more errors on the Samsung's because more of them have been sold. Other problem of Samsung is the huge grey channel of stock which has had all sorts from DOA drives to drives that are reporting only a tiny amount of what they should.

WD on the other hand control their markets well and because they sell less 1TB you hear less stories.

The F1 is probably the best all-rounder but my money would go to WD still.

Happy with my F1, but previous Samsungs have failed so I only use it as a cheap place to store shared files that I have backed up elsewhere.

I spoke to a someone from large retailer's returns department who told me that returns for failure on the F1, Seagate 1TB and WD 1TB drives were virtually identical, all at under 1%.

I am sure that is the case. Being in charge of a network of over 50 PCs though (and a 7 system home network), I tend to go off what I have seen. The old IBM's were terrible when the got to around 20GB-40GB in early mainstream 7200RPM models. Since then one of the two Samsung SATA's I bought failed despite low usage and a large number of Maxtors failed (though we have had more Maxtors than any others). No problems with Seagate or Western Digital. Since Seagate and Maxtor seem to be the same company now that means that Western Digital gets my vote for critical drives. The Green Power range also run exceptionally cool, quiet and use minimal juice :)

i have not heard much good for the F1 1 TB, i heard it fails a lot

With the pricing and performance it would be interesting to see by what margin it leads the sales. I wouldn't be surprised if they are selling more 1TB drives at the moment than the rest of the manufacturers combined. That being the case you will always hear far more complaints.

I bought a Samsung before the WD Black edition was released & as soon as they get a bit closer to £100 I will use the F1 for backup.

The samsung is ok, but like seagates of old NCQ must be disabled on nFoarse4 to prevent crc errors. There still seems to be the occasional glitch though.

You would pay £40 more for this - http://www.storagereview.com/php/be...&numDrives=1&devID_0=368&devID_1=361&devCnt=2 ?

If the Black Editions ever reach £100 the F1's will be more like £60.

You shouldn't be using NCQ on a desktop PC, you get worse performance with it on.

Sweeping statement! :) Considering the e-tail market in the UK alone sells many thousands a week it is more likely you will hear of failures.

As above. The Samsung 1TB is the No. 1 selling drive for OcUK and therefore we receive more returns. In percentage terms they're pretty similar.

Black Editions are not far off but it's no reason for Samsung to drop their prices as they can only just keep up demand and they sell in huge volumes already. Samsung are also the cheapest by quite a chunk. WD have not seen the sales they were expecting on the Black and therefore have dropped the price to the point where it is now selling.

people are actually buying the black drives? £93 and £120 is selling? hehe. if they were £75 and £100 then they might be an alright ISH deal but way overpriced. I hope the 74GB velociraptors come down in price as they look tasty and are no longer noisy, but £102 is harsh.
