Want a new hdd for me pc to store movie files tv progs etc and my 500gb is nearly full, so....

Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB 32mb cache

or

western digital 1tb 16mb cache

(or any other in stock at ocuk)

i tend to like WD just cos im fickle and like to stick with brands that i like,
but i do like samsung for screens and stuff, and it has a bigger cache!

so help me out guys!!

thanks

Dan

As stated above you could get the best part of 3 x 500Gb for the price of a single 1Tb drive so more space and potentially less I/O contention for the same money.

However it does mean more space in the case and slightly more power consumption so if you've got your heart set on a single 1Tb drive it has to be the Samsung. The WD trades speed for lower power usage and while it's no slowcoach it's a fair bit off the speed of the Samsung.

well i already have two raptors in there for system files (raid 0) and although i have the space and the PSU, for extra 500gb drives, i thought it might be better to have the 1tb + the 500gb to backup those essentials... what do you guys think?

If the two 500GB drives / 1tb drive contain non essential files, (i.e. those that you wouldn't mind losing because they're non vital or are being backed up), then just for the money factor I'd go for the two smaller ones.

I suppose you double the risk of mechanical failure but I suppose it would just be a case of RMA time if you're unfortunate and you lose one. Losing one rather than two also confers the advantage of less data being lost (and therefore having a smaller restore job (presuming that you split your data across both drives at the same time, rather than filling up one, and then moving onto the second)).

Also you'd be paying a premium atm for a 1TB drive so if you really want a large single one then i'd go for a 750GB drive as the price per GB is a bit better...

I see what you are saying, and my idea is to copy all of my data from the 500and mirror it (not proply just sync it or the old fasioned way...) and leave me room to spare..

my reason for this investment is that i have a synology ds-107e and its just recently broke on me (unexpectedly) the server software is corrupt i guess so i am gna have to recover my data from that (hopefully) and then reinstall that.. but i have files on there like music and films that i dont want to loose, that also has copies of my data from the 500 but not all of it...

so i usually use the DS to share files, and what i wanted to do was instead use the 1tb hd as the main backup with room to spare,

i was also thinking about sata ports, im not sure (without looking) how many spare i have but i believe i have 4 ports, (and 3 in use) i spose i could get 2 750's and put one in the DS and one in the PC with the 500 and use the 500 for non essential storage?

I have just bought 2 750s and I'm going to RAID 1 them

Brand loyalty has no place in computing, you use what's best for your needs at the time. If you're going with 1TB then you either want the Samsung F1 or the Hitachi (in that order) The Samsung has fewer platers so a higher platter density, the Hitachi has more platters but is still a very good performer. £/Gb makes 500's the better buy, the TB drives are at a premium atm being flagship models.
