Which 1TB HDD?

What concerns me about the WD Black is that it is reported to not be the quietest of the 1TB drives, especially compared to the Samsung. And it is £12 more than the others which, whilst trifling, still makes a difference.

If I used a smaller drive as an OS HDD, what would you recommend? As cheap as is reasonable would be the key there and it's sole purpose would be to get me booted up quickly and games loaded quickly.

I've just seen the Samsung F2 EcoGreen 1TB at £56.99, cheaper than the F1 1TB. Also, the Seagate Barracuda 12 1TB seems slightly faster according to Tom's Hardware and is only £1 more. Which of these should I go for?

The Seagate 12 uses 500Gb platters compared to the WD Blacks 333Mb platters. Thats why the Seagate 12 is faster and the more advanced drive. Get that.

Spinpoint F1 everyday. I use the Samsung EcoGreen F2's as they use less power and are quieter (plus they were cheaper).

The more I read into 1TB drives, the less convinced I am by them. Am I better off shooting for a 750GB or 500GB - therefore a faster drive? The 1TBs seem prone to failing...

well the best out of those i would say is Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB but honestly i would buy a western digital when it comes to hdd like others have said.

Unfortunately I'm really eking out every pound I can. I'm already £35 over-budget and don't want to push that to £45 with a Western Digital. Hence my difficulty in justifying getting the superior Barracuda 12. I just get the feeling the gains (especially for a storage drive) are just too small to warrant the price increase.

Rather than create new thread I am jumping on this one. I want some new drives for storage only although I will be storing and transferring large video files. I quite fancy the price of the ecogreen F2 on this week only. Would this drive be my best bet for a second storage drive? Thanks

They're not the quickest drive in the world, but I use them for storing video back ups too, and I can't complain - especially when they're a bit cheaper than the others.

Whats wrong with the Hitachi? I like how they are so cheap for the amount of storage they give, but I'm suspicious about why they are so cheap.
