Morning all

Im after a 24inch monitor mainly for playing the like of bioshock etc. I have a geforce 8800 ultra so plenty of boost from the gfx department.

But, and its a BIG but, i dont know what monitor to got for. I hear the dells have ghosting and there is a panel lottery with the samsungs (my main 2 choices!)

So, your comments/suggestions/advice all very welcome please.

Bonjour!

I've had the 226bw (just sold..regrettably!!) and the dell 2407.

The panel lottery business is a total load of hype...226bw's are extremely competitively priced imo. I apparently got one of the worst panel types (cmo), i got the colours looking v good and the responsiveness was fantastic for an LCD and its fair to say it totally wipes the floor with the dell 2407 when it comes to blur/ghosting.

Dell 2407 is pretty similar to the other varients of 24" screens, they all ghost to some degree but generally the dell/benq etc etc 24" screens cope well with fast paced games like quake and warsow. Fortunately these days games firms bring out total tripe where the player runs so slow!!! you'd probably not notice much ghosting regardless of which lcd you bought on a game like bioshock. Naturally on an oldschool game like quake1 where the players run 5 times as quick your obviously going to get more problems.

Dell 2407wfp is considered such a sound buy because people generally feel it looks better than the other 24" screens and just so happens to be a fair bit cheaper if you look carefully too. Most people who buy benq's are probably just trying to be difference imo as theres so little between them performance wise.

The Samsung 226bw 2ms is such a nice screen for its price and if you have your head right on into the monitor, the viewing angles should never be a problem. Its just if you play say..footy games for example with friends and one of you is either side of the screen you start to notice the viewing angles arent ideal. I think i got caught with this a bit thinking "the grass is greener on the other side" and bought a dell 2407 which of course is better (apart from responsiveness), but at a huge cost difference. I sort of regret selling my 226bw already but one of them had to go and from a browsing pov the dell 2407wfp is just sooo easy to live with :D

Hope this helps!

The review on "TrustedReviews" isn't exactly glowing, is it???

Prob with trusted reviews is they're just so random. One thing thats genuinely v good they'll be giving a hard time then they'll give a really glowing 10/10 review for an 8600 gfx card @ £110 pricepoint when an xt1950xt can be had for not much more.

Surely the acer one is tn based?

"viewing angles 160" certainly suggests so. If thats the case it won't be close to as good PQ as the dell, and its price reflects this. Good price though!

Just to throw in the fact that Dell's warranty is second to none.

With review sites its always hit and miss, i'd take the fact that everyone here who uses the screen day in day out recommends it.

Either way, your going to be happy with your purchase. I went with the Dell, i found it hard to turn down a decent price on a samsung, but the warranty, the USB hub (which is a gimic yes) the card slots, the extra inputs (i switch between xbox 360), the looks of it won over anything from Acer despite the slight price difference.

So you're basically saying, in your opinion, that the Dell is the one to go for? The HC version or not? Another question about the Dell... How high up does the Dell raise up from the base? I only ask because my desk has two shelves either side of the monitor, so the monitor will have to be raised up until it clears the shelves.

the acer has the exact same panel as the dell

you have proof of this ? as i think the acer is a tn film and the dell is spva.
the hc 2407 will be good but it's only just come out so still revision A01 i think.

Out of interest, is the firmware on a monitor flashable by us, or can only manufacturers do this?

Dont think the Acer 24inch beast is the same panel as the Dells ;)

Gonna be tricky to compare 2 TFTs where ones almost 2X more the cost ;)

Im at a loss which one still to go the Sammy 24inch or the Dell, if I go with Dell id risk the HC simply cos I know in say 6 months time I can just DOA it and get the Rev02 with Fixed ghosting or hopefully Dells warranty covers that issue its still unclear if it will though, but id risk it cos the HCs a similar price and much better quality.

Im sure the 4 year business warranty will cover the ghosting issue?

I got mine when the HC wasnt out. Depends if you will benefit from the HC if your a colour profesional.

Your second point is interesting! If i had one gripe about this monitor, it would be that the stand doesnt go high enough, i could measure it if your curious about this? I think you can buy a higher stand though, we have a couple at work, although they were for older revisions.

So I understand, but isn't this fixed in later revisions, and doesn't the HC version have "better" colours?
There is no later revisions, the HC is brand new. If you've read about problems fixed in later revisions that must be referring to the 2407WFP not the 2407WFP-HC.

I wouldn't buy the HC full stop at the moment.

There is a 24" monitor for everyone.

I went with the Gateway as I needed heavy adjustability, lots of connections and an S-PVA screen for good viewing angles. I decided that I would put up with the reduced warranty in return for huge savings.

The Dell and Benq are good buys. The samsung and Iiyama are also good and less likely to ghost - although you sacrifice connections and viewing angles over the S-PVA screens.
