I'm shortly going to rebuild my PC with Windows 8 and thought it would be a good time to invest in an SSD. The SSD will be used as the OS and apps drive, and will also have a few games installed that will regularly be played online.

I'm looking at the following models which are all pretty much the same price over here in Adelaide:

  • Kingston V300 240GB
  • OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS 240GB
  • Plextor M5S 256GB
  • Samsung 840 (Non-Pro) 250GB
  • Sandisk Extreme 240GB

Which would you recommend, and why? Looking at various website benchmarks, there isn't much in it performance wise.

All other things being equal, I'd go for the one with the best warranty. Not on your list, I know, but the Samsung 840 Pro comes with 5 years warranty; I'm considering this one for my next build.

Hmmm, the Pro is around $60 more expensive which I don't think I can justify.

These 5 all have 3 year warranties so there's no help in deciding there. Cheers anyway.

I can't offer much advice other than to say I have been running the Plextor in my system for about week now. Win 7 boots very quickly and load times in Far Cry 3 are greatly improved but I expect that would be true for any of those drives.

I made my decision based on price, capacity and stated performance and the the balance of those put the Plextor just ahead of the Samsung at the time of purchase. I would rather get a bit extra storage than speed if the day to day if the speed isn't that noticable in day to day usage, which is why I quickly ruled out the 240Gb drives.

Do you know what, I hadn't actually considered that. Sure it's only 16GB extra but on a small drive that might actually make a difference. Think you may have just convinced me! Thanks :)

To be honest there's probably no difference them in the real world. I'd ditch the OCZ simply because they've had so many reliability problems.

Personally I wouldn't go for OCZ, too many problems.

Go for any drive from the following Manufactures:

Corsair (Force GT/GS, Neutron/GTX)
Crucial (M4, M5)
Samsung (830, 840, 840 pro)
Intel (330,335,520 series)

I picked up a Plextor M5S 256GB at the weekend, along with a WD Blue 1TB as a new games and documents drive. I've finished the initial Win8 install and driver/firmware patching, and I'm now half way through moving the Steam and Origin games from my old drive to the new drives (regularly played online games on the M5S, all others on the WD Blue).

Still need to install a few other apps and copy over my remaining files but first impressions are great. Boot up time has dropped by over 20 seconds, though how much is due to the SSD and how much is due to a fresh Windows install I'm not sure. I'm yet to carry out any benchmarks, but all applications have installed and open very quickly so I'm happy.

Thanks for the advice guys :)
