I'm looking to replace or augment my 80gb intel ssd with a larger ssd for os and game installs now prices seem a bit more reasonable. since I'm sick of running out of space for game installs for steam. I'm using a sata 2 motherboard so I assume I won't get full read-write speeds on the faster ones using sata2? Which ssd of around 256gb would be best or best value for money? Any to avoid?

If I were buying today I would probably get a Crucial M4 or the Samsung 830.

Can't offer much in the way of argument for either. I currently have an M4 and it has been rock solid.

Cheers for the speedy replies! Is it worth getting a sata 3 card or will the speed difference not be noticeable? Also should I be looking at a sandforce card or the other for a game install drive?

How much is a sata 3 card? I think you'd be better saving for a new mobo to be honest than chucking money into an older system. WIll still be noticeably quicker using a sata 2 port over a mechanical.

I presume you have a s775 system? or odler amd?

I like the look of the neutron ssd's getting good reviews, considering getting one myself, if you want a different option.

I ahve decided to move from my 128gn M4 to a 256. Now, I am in the same boat as you and wondering which is best to get. Got to be honest I think it's between the M4 and 830. Annoyed with myself now as I've missed the samsung cashback.

I know sandisk are reliable but the aftersales support is what concerns me. Crucial/samsung seem to be very good in responding quickly to any issues or needed firmware upgrades. decisions decisions.

I had a 128GB m4 and switched it out for an 830 256GB. The m4 felt quicker for most day to day things but the 830 seems faster when I have MS SQL server running. There both good drives but if they are the same price I would get an m4.

If it were for a sata3 system I would go with either a vertex 3 or 4 if you prefer to avoid sandforce. The intel 520 series is decent but over priced at the moment.

Just don't flash to the latest M4 firmware, then there's no problem. I'd take that over the Sandforce drives, which have had BSOD issues since day one, not been fixed, and not even Intel's engineers have been able to pin down.

Sure, loads of people have had no problems, but why take the risk?

M4 without the latest firmware. Wouldn't touch a brand new 840 SSD until it's been out for a few months and bugs/issues are confirmed or not.

Are you planning on upgrading from SATA2 in the near future? If not then getting anything high end is going to be a bit of a waste.

That being said many of the cheaper drives are SF based, so if it was me, I'd get either the M4 or the 830, just go with the cheapest. I know the OCZ Vertex 4 isn't SF based but I was never that impressed with OCZs support.

The Samsung 830 laptop version comes with a USB to SATA transfer cable but if I were you I would simply open the case and connect the drive to a spare SATA port.

Done. However a cable would still be handy as going to use my now spare ssd in my htpc.

Got a 256 M4 from Speed in the end. Glad I stuck with crucial, very happy. Macrium reflect has been fantastic too, recommend to anyone
