I wonna upgrade my current rig to 2gb so I can stick my 1gb ocz stuff in another comp.

Just not sure which way to go though, my cpu is clocked at 2.5ghz (250 x 10) so I was thinking going with some pc4000 so I could run 1:1 with timings of like 3-4-4-8 but was just wondering if it would be better getting some pc3200 and run it on a divider and have tighter timings?

So basicly just wonna know if higher fsb with slack timings or lower fsb (divider) with tighter timings, which one would be better?

Ta CaNNoN :D

Yer was looking at some g.skill stuff, they have some pc4000 and some pc3200 for around the £150 mark, still unsure if higher fsb or tight timings would be better?

well i would imagine the pc4000 modules can handle a better fsb speed, which will give you more freedom for oc'ing. and tbh you will probably get more fps with the pc4000 kit.

however somepeople prefer tight timings over fsb speed.(god knows why because i never saw a review where the 2gb 3200 kit outperformed a 2gb 4000 kit, with respectable timings)

i'd go pc4000 my ocz stuff is the mutts nutts if you could stretch it.

Tighter timings are more beneficial on an A64 system. You'd be better off going for some good 3200 stuff with tighter timings than some DDR500 RAM with lose timings:)

but like i said 3-4-4-8 at ddr500 is respectable, i doubt the 3200 with 2-3-2-5 timings would outperform it And he gets more oc options.

I would say it would actually... because the 3200 could probably clock a fair but and also keep decent timings as Scoobie Dave has shown. Alternatively... Get some Corsair 3500LL, can run mine at 2.5-3-2-5@254MHz, get the best of both worlds:)

I run my ZX @ 2.5 3 5 2 - 1T 234Mhz @2.65v ;)

That will blow away your 3-4-4-8 at ddr500 :D

yeah but at those speeds the pc4000 could probably do similar timings........AND overclock higher than your ram

So prob best to go with the g.skill ZX stuff rather than the HZ and run the mem on a divider with the tight timings.

Will that give me any increase at all looking at my current setup in my sig?

Ram won't nessecarily give you an increase in performance. It will make a number of programs run smoother, gaming etc should run smoother without any slow downs etc (biggest thing for me was the start of a round of BF2 was about 20 seconds of lag, now with 2gb it's spot on straight away!!!)

My whole system just runs better and easier to ALT-TAB out of BF2 to desktop whereas i couldn;t do that previously without the hard disk grinding away like mad!!

Yeah right.

Timings are far more important than bandwidth on the A64 platform.

I think you need to read this dude:

i'm pretty sure there are reviews of ddr500 memory where the reviewer tests at pc3200 at 2-3-2-5 timing, then again at pc4400 at say 3-4-4-8, and you can bet your ass that the pc4400 stuff gets far more healthy fps.

i'll find a link.

The ZX is the one I'd go for, the tight timings at DDR400 will beat DDR500 at 3-4-4-8 as Scoobie Dave has said.

You'll only really see a noticeable benefit in games that use more than a gig of RAM, such as BF2, Oblivion etc, as you won't be paging to disk anymore which slows things down markedly.

The tighter timings than your current RAM will give you a small all round performance boost.

does css need more than a gig of ram?

It depends on your resolution and detail level. To find your own memory usage, play CSS for a bit, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL goto to performance and check the value in the commit charge box. If the peak value is over 1046960 ish, then you're using up your gig of RAM and paging.

I run it at 1280x1024 (lcd Setting), everything on high but with HDR off as it kills my fps, I have the logitech G-15 keyboard too (has a mem/cpu usage display), my ram usually get to around 95-98% cpu is always 100%. But with the newer games coming out, 2Gb is always gonna help in the long run isnt it.
