Which 2TB HDD?

Hi guys,

I'm after a 2TB HDD to store my media on and have been looking at the rather tempting price of the Seagate Barracuda. The only thing that is throwing me off getting this drive are the numerous reviews it's had that mention the 'clicking and whirring' noises.

What drive would you guys recommend. I'd say my budget is probably around the £80 mark.

How does the WD Caviar Green 2TB (5400rpm) drive perform? Again seems very nicely priced.

Thanks for your help guys.

David

I'm using two of these at the moment: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM

No clicking or whirring noises that I can hear.

If you're not in a rush it might be worth waiting to see what comes up on This Week Only over the next few weeks.

There are usually a few HDDs included.

Yeah, those reviews do put me off. It may have been something that's been resolved, a dodgy batch perhaps. In my bid to keep this PC as quiet as possible, I don't want to have to worry about the hard drive making unnecessary noises!

That's around the price I'd like to pay though.

Edging towards the WD 2TB Green though. Is the 5400rpm anything to be concerned about? The disk will purely be used for storage purposes. XBMC will point to this drive mainly for it's sources, that's about it.

Thanks guys

I have one too and the only thing I've noticed is a strange chirping sound VERY rarely, when the PC boots up or something. It's really not a problem.

Another recomendation for the Seagate here, just bought that 2TB drive and not noticed any noises from it and the performance has been very good. I noticed some of the reviews mentioning clicks said it may be firmware related. I checked with the seagate tool and my drive has the latest firmware, might be worth quickly checking the one you get to make sure it's got the latest on.

Owned more than 20 seagate drives and no faults at all.
Can give Western Digital Blacks and Blues a go as well. Owned some of them and they were great. Had a Green and ditched that instantly. Felt sluggish IMO

Thanks, I'll make sure I've got the latest firmware when it arrives.

I didn't see any 3TB for that sort of money. Oh well. If I manage to fill this up I'll see what can be done :)

Thanks for the recommendations both of you.

I'm also looking to get a 2TB drive and looking at the Seagate.

Can you let me know if you have any noise issues with yours SirChumpalot?

Cheers.

I use WD Green 2TB and have had no problems with it at all. Silent, the only noise in my PC is the other ancient 150GB HDD I have installed alongside :D

There's something crazy going on with HDD prices.
I needed 2 x Seagate 2TB drives, but I found I could save £6 per drive by buying the retail external USB ones (STBV2000200) rather than the OEM bare drives.
So I now have 2 x spare USB 3.0 caddies with power supplies & cables, plus I saved £12!
Obviously bare drives are way overpriced at the moment (as it must cost Seagate around £5 -£10 more to make the USB version in the first place).
FYI: The drive currently fitted in this caddy is model No. ST2000DM001
The stock I received (not from ocuk) had DOM 02/2013 on both drives.
