I bought the samsung HD203WI after having read various reviews on other drives.
I owned 4 WD 1tb caviar blacks and 3 of them have failed within a year and the last kept overheating. I bought more because they were still cheaper than the 2tbs at the time, the replacements still get quite hot but they seem to be ok for now.
I have 2 samsung 500gb drives raided and have had 0 problems.
I have a couple of seagates, whilst good they are noisy.
I came across a pretty good post which described the most common reviews i had read:
Seagate 2tb: High failure rate (according to newegg), noisy seeks. But good transfer rate (avg 95mb/s) and random access time (12.6ms).
WD 2tb green: Clicking noises from head park issue, slow random access time (15ms), pauses due to head parking, slow transfer rates (avg 70mb/s). But most quiet, if you manage to turn off head parking.
WD 2tb black: Very expensive (almost $400), noisy. But fastest random access time (less than 10ms!) and fast transfer rate (avg 100mb/s).
Hitachi 2tb: 5 platters instead of 4, noisy and hot. Nothing really good about them.
Samsung 2tb F3EG: Slow random access time (15ms). But seems to be very quiet and cool, and has decent transfer rates (avg 90mb/s).
Samsung 1tb F3: Slow random access time (13.8ms). But everything else about it is great (fast transfer rate avg 110mb/s) and quiet.
