A colleague has asked for advice on the above, but I've no idea as I'm only interested in DSLRs.

Can anyone shed any light on what's good at the moment?

The Fujifilm HS series is pretty good. I have an old Fujifilm S200 EXR bridge which I still use, as the features of the camera and ease of it outweigh getting an entry level DSLR. I have not used the latest HS camera, but from what I understand, it has a X30 optical zoom lens (my s200EXR is x14.5), so should be perfect for everyday use.

At £300 I'd just go entry level DSLR and get a Nikon D3100. Can be had for £294 (with Cashback) at Jessops.

lumix dmc-g3 can be had for 299 now

suppose it depends whether or not he wants lenses or the convenience of a superzoom

seeing there asking about a bridge camera
i'd say they want high zoom without changing lens

the Fujifilm FinePix HS30 30x zoom can be had for about £280
or a Panasonic FZ48 for £199, I still have one, nice camera

Thanks for your replies. I suggested off the top of my head that he might want to consider Fuji and Panasonic - I'll get back to him with those model numbers.

I got the impression from him that he wanted something compact, so I don't think he'll be interested in SLRs.

Panasonic FZ48 would be my recommendation.

I have it's predecessor, and it's not bad. IQ is a bit lacking, as is noise performance. That said apart from that it is well built, feels solid, and has an epic zoom :p

I have the FZ38 and I think it has good picture quality and is pretty flexible

does great macro shots
