Hi all,

I've got some free time so I'm wanting to start one of the (J)-RPGs which I never completed.

On the 360 I've only completed Blue Dragon (which really liked) & Final Fantasy XIII - I started playing Lost Odyssey about a 2 years ago and while the story was great the frequency of the random encounters felt a little excessive.

So, which J-RPG to play?

  • Lost Odyssey
  • Tales of Vesperia (seems to get good reviews - I only played it for about an hour but hated the character style, especially the guard enemies, does it get better)?
  • Enchanted Arms
  • Eternal Sonata
  • Star Ocean: The Last Hope
  • MagnaCarta 2
  • The Last Remnant
  • Resonance of Fate
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/opinions!

My 3 picks out of that list would be;

Tales of Vesperia
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Resonance of Fate

But if I was to choose one, then I'd go for Resonance of Fate, simply because of the combat system and the more tactical approach. Quite difficult to get into grips at first and some battles can be frustratingly hard, but it is also a nice change of pace from the usual stuff.

I've played and finished almost all the JRPGs other than Star Ocean IV (Which I did play for an hour but didn't take to.)

Imo...

Lost Odyssey > Blue Dragon > Tales of Vesperia > The Last Remnant > Magna Carta 2 >>>> Infinite Undiscovery > Enchanted Arms > Eternal Sonata > Phantasy Star Universe.

If you liked the strategic turn based combat of Blue Dragon you might really take to The Last Remnant (install mandatory). If I was to recommend one though it would be Tales of Vesperia; plenty there to really keep you busy.

I'll take Abooie's way of doing it.

Lost Odyssey > Tales of Vesperia > Blue Dragon > Star ocean the last hope > The Last Remnant > Resonance of fate > Enchanted Arms > Magna Carta 2 > Infinite Undiscovery > Eternal Sonata > Phantasy Star Universe.

I really enjoyed last remnant, it is really good. BUT it was so badly optimized it just killed the game for so many

If you have a PC capable, Get it for that, and you wont regret it.

Alternatively installing it to the 360 hard drive does make it run a little bit better.

Yeah I enjoyed The Last Remnant as well, PC version that is. A few enemies tend to be a little bit harder i.e. much more HP compared to the Xbox 360 version. The battle system might be confusing and difficult at times, but because of the tactical nature and the size of battles you can have, it kept me interested.

I've also noticed that there is a possibility that a few elements of The Last Remnant could have actually affected or influenced some of the game design choices for Final Fantasy XIII. And with the whole worldwide strategy thing, I guess this was a prototype of sorts.

Lost Odyssey > good but realy hard with good side quest
id say get a cheap ps 1 iv seen them for £2 lol and get Final Fantasy VII if you havnt ever played it! i hope it comes to xbox live some day!!!!!!!
Blue Dragon > i have only played an hour of it but it seems ok but a bit childish

Out of that list i've only played Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.

Lost Odyssey was pretty good, but the characters lack any hint of charisma and the storyline is a little meh. Still it is quite good none the less, the combat and levelling system is very satisfying.

Blue Dragon was a hideous abortion of a game, i personally would avoid it.
