Hi all,

i am looking to move from having hard drives for storage on my pcs, to having one central point of storage, this will allow me not to worry about which pc has got the latest version of a file on etc

i currently have 3 x 3tb segeate drives in the two of my machines that i would like to use in the NAS

will these drives work ?

also i would like to have the NAS backup all the data on it regularly and stream movies to a smart TV or my tablet etc

i have found two which look promising :

RN10400-100EUS Netgear ReadyNAS 104 4-Bay NAS Storage (Diskless)

and

Qnap TS-412 4 Bay 3.5"/2.5" NAS

which of these is best and will a NAS be a solution for my problem

Thanks

I'm not familiar with those NAS devices, but I recently bought a HP Microserver and that's doing a fab job. It was only £104 after cashback (although I think the cashback has since ended). Well worth it if you can get one on the cheap.

What is a micro server ? And how is it different from a nas

It's a small 4 bay server with a 1.5Ghz Dual Core CPU. It gives you the flexibility to install whatever OS you wish. Most people run Windows Home Server (~£35) which allows you to do things like automatic backups, raid, remote index media. With it being Windows based you can install anything you like on the server such as FTP server, Plex media streamer, VOIP server, Auto Backup software, etc. A lot of people have added a BR drive and a GPU and use it as a HTPC. Free Linux based server OSs are available, but obviously harder to set up.

I had a cheap NAS before getting this Microserver and the biggest difference is transfer speeds. With the Microserver the read/writes are close to 100MB/s so it's almost as fast as having the HDD connected directly.

There's a mega thread discussing the Microserver here:

Looks like cashback is currently not available so they cost around £200, but quite a few are around 2nd hand for less than that, or wait until the cashback is back on (which I'm certain it will be at some point).
