Which 40" TV?

It's worth looking at the very similar but cheaper 40MU6120. Specs are very similar but the MU6120 lacks Samsungs Crystal Colour (both have 8 bit panels) and smart remote. In the flesh I noticed very little difference and decided to go for the cheaper option.

A soundbar would probably be the neatest option.

IMO I'd rather have "messy cables and lots of boxes but kickass audio" then making do with a crap sound system
The TV will have a soundbar as the standard of sound from modern TV's is dreadful almost like they are trying to force you into buying something extra......

The room needs to be nice and neat I've done my time with ghetto installs with wires everywhere, we don't watch enough TV and two kids under 5 make cables a nightmare!

Thats a decent saving will definitely have a look in the shop as you say the spec difference is pretty minimal.

Out of interest a1ex2001 which model did you go for? I'm in an identical situation weighing up whether to go for the 6400 or 6120. I don't want to penny pinch and buy the wrong option.

40" is pretty much the biggest TV I can fit where we want it the gap it is going in is about 95cm wide. Sadly nobody makes high end sets in this size anymore despite low 40s being one of the best selling sizes they try and steer everyone up in size so they can increase profits! So I'm left choosing bettween a few mid range options current front runners are:

  1. Samsung MU6400 Series
  2. Panasonic TX-40EX700B
I'm leaning towards the Samsung as it seems to review better and offer brighter more punchy picture, the thing holding me back is I've always been a Panasonic fan and a lot of Samsung TV's seem too bright to me!

If the money was yours which of these two would you get or is there another option I'm missing?

you didn't look too hard then.

john lewis sell a premium 40" from samsung for like £1200 or something stupid. it's "the frame" tv.

I've looked at that a few weeks ago. .. All it does is add famous art shots in a rotation fashion. So it's like an art gallery.. The tv is nothing special

really? they want £1300 just for some additional wallpapers? on a 40" screen? that is lolworthy. i assumed it was a premium panel with all the bells and whistles for that money

It's more about it looking discreet when off which I can see the appeal of. TV's when not in use are pretty ugly beasts the frame tv does a great job of looking like a normal picture frame when off not worth the price but could be interesting in a few years!

so basically your tv is left on 24/7 consuming electricity even when nobody is home?

seems like a stupid concept if it had smart home configuration so it knows somebody is home to keep art mode on it would be better but who would seriously pay an additional thousand quid for this?

It's a style over substance thing, I've not read anything but I assume it goes into some sort of low power mode when displaying static images. It won't appeal to the members here Burbank plenty of people like this sort of thing. What I'd really like to see is the ability to leave a static image on screen when the tv off with virtually no power consumption a bit like on a kindle not going to happen but would be good!
