Which 460?

I have the Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB OC (got for <£170 inc VAT+postage), and it's very quiet, just a tiny swoosh of air, and I can't hear the fan change between desktop and in-game. It's quiet all the time. It's still running at stock though (715MHz core).

Unlike my single-slot BFG 8800GT which had an ear-piercing whine which sounded like a 747 in-game. OCCT GPU would overheat it and it had to shutdown. The fan on the 8800GT would start at 100% on power-on, so it would be deafening for a few seconds. It's weird starting my PC now, it's almost silent when I press the power-on button (sometimes I think I've not actually pressed the button all the way in).

Ah, that was because they were in SLI, and how his mobo was the cards were right next to each other, you'd get the same problem with any cards in SLI.
Yeah I know. But i think the Giga's and MSI cards would react more to the lack of space because of their design.

I'm in exactly the same boat mate. First time i turned my PC on with the Gigabyte 460 in there and i thought i actually bust my PC as i got so accustomed to the 8800GTS fan blowing at 100%!

I really like the Gigabyte model. It runs cool, quiet and is a silent beast.

I'm also interested in the recently announced MSI HAWK mind. That card goes to 1Ghz!!

WARNING: Stay Away from Palit Sonic Platinum gtx 460 everybody who bought it at lanuch RMA'd there is "Official RMA'd my GTX 460" thread.

The cheeky palit sent out a different version to the reviewers than ran cooler and quitter.

The retail one, the real one, does not have VRAM heatsink sky rocketing the temperatures and therefore increasing noise from the fan as it has to keep up. They released new bios that you might have to flash to but there high temps are still there.

again stay away from palit 460

Wait for gigabyte 460, I heard its good and be sure to get 1gb version as it costs a little more but offers great increase in performance.

Stop spreading lies the plait cards were fix very quickly with a updated bios

Mines runs see sig @ max 74c with a 40% fan some people are just picky i think :D

the zotac one I tested was very good. And 5 year warranty is a big bonus

The Inno3d was is pretty good, I have it clocked at 900/1800/2200 on 1.087 but even with the fan locked at 40% its audible, though it doesent bother me at all because my old cpu cooler was much worse.

I'd probably go for the MSI Cyclone, seems to be the best at the moment and its pretty quiet, heard one myself.

Every review says the Zotac is the loudest 460 there is  (Along with the EVGA EE)

I wouldnt agree with that. Its quieter than the GTX275 it replaced especially under load. Ive just been running the mafia bench mark and all i can hear is the whoosh from the air :)
