My effin Barracuda just died even though it wasn't on seagates failure list. Thankfully I can still access the data, just can't boot from it. Ubuntu live CD to the rescue!

A lot of the 500GB drives are very closely priced, which one should I go for?

I'd go with the western digital WD5000AAKS

Although I would reccomend stretching to the WD6400AAKS as its a much faster disk. They do 100MB/s average read..

Would still be my top pick... tho in the unlikely event the 7200.12 line ends up the same way I wouldn't touch seagate again despite 15 years of rock solid performance from them - I've got through about 10 of these 7200.12s now without a single problem so far - they are insanely quiet and very quick drives - a real step above any other 500gig drive at the moment aslong as they are immune to the 7200.11 debacle.

Ever since the AAKS drives and onwards WD have been pushing out very decent drives... this would be my next pick (not the blue as above which are the old tech).

Seagate have lost my trust after the 7200.11 m'larky. The black looks good.

Just a query for the other guy why is the 640GB Blue faster than the 500GB Blue or did you mean as above to stretch to the black?

I've ordered the Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS)
