Which 5090?

Bear in mind that we are probably 12-18 months away from the 6000 series.

Is it really wise putting down so much money now on a 5090?

If you already have a 4090 and your just gaming I wouldn't be upgrading.

A lot of us were in the same predicament holding off buying a 4090 since the 5090 launch was around the corner and we all know how that went. Plus we all know how NVidia's focus has shifted off gaming, at this rate we can expect a $5000 card with 33GB of VRAM.
 
@naefeart I have owned multiple Suprims 5090 and astral variants. I owned 2 suprim 5090's one died within a month and the other I returned due to excessive coil wine and one liquid cooled one. of the astrals I owned the black astral retunerd to stupidly excessive coil 2 liquid cooled ones. one I had to return immediately as there was a faulty intermitten connector so sometimes the fan spun up on the radiator sometimes it didn;t and another one I returned as I had enough. But funilly enough the white astral I got was the best of the bunch. little to minimal coil whine.

Does that mean teh white Astral is the best hands down? nope it means I got lucky. sa,e thing with the 4090's I will say teh MSI RMA is very good although it was done through OCUK who were brilliant.

As you say, luck plays a major part in getting a decent card, regardless of brand. I was lucky this time with MSI, but my Zotac 4090 was also excellent. I think the last time I got a bad card, it was a Gainward Golden Sample, but it was rectified by the retailer very quickly.

Good to hear your Astral is going well, I’d heard some people received duff ones which coloured my view at the time.

I think there will be a huge wave of used 5090's being sold on the cheap when the 6000 series does launch.

The 6000 series will be a huge leap over the 5000 series due to the new process node, the 5090 will be 'old hat' for these AI/productivity workloads and will be offloaded quickly.

Used 5090's (with warranty remaining) will be a great buy for gamers and will probably be significantly cheaper (and faser) than a 6080.

I basically got my money back upon selling my 4090. Back in March I couldn’t even buy a 5080 and the prices were getting worse by the week. In stock 5090s made sense to me, rather than waiting 12-18 months, more actually as my original post was 3 months ago.

Just my opinion, but I think used 5090's will be much cheaper than launch, assuming the 6090 is 50-70% faster in rasterization and even more so in AI workloads.

The 5000 series will literally be obsolete for these workloads, the 6000 series will be that fast.

We're going to see up to a ~1.3-1.6x transistor density increase going from 5nm to the new process node (2nm or 3nm). That's a huge increase in transistors, performance per watt, and that's before any architectural improvements. Remember the 5000 series was on the exact same process as the 4000 series.

Add in new DLSS modes and other new software (hardware locked) features, this will be the most exciting launch for quite some time.

You're expecting the 6090 to be that much faster? I hope so :D but only expecting that performance jump and better from RT/PT games personally. But fair point with the architectural improvements, could definitely end up being true if Nvidia want to lay the smackdown at least.

I think so, though this is assuming they crank the 6090 to the same 575W stock TDP of the 5090. They may dial back down the TDP and so the gains will be less, giving them room for the 7000 series on the same process node.

AMD may force their hand if they decide to release a high end card next gen on the new process node.
