Hi all,

Budget is around £800 - looking for a 55" TV, mainly for online streaming (Netflix, Prime video, Now TV). Will eventually be looking to connect it with a sound bar or 5.1 system.

What do you think out of the following? (also happy for other suggestions)

LG 55SK8000PLB 55"

Panasonic TX-55FX700B 55"

Sony KD55XF7003BU 55"

Philips 55PUS6703 55"

Viewing distance is around 6ft 8" - so if you think 55" is too big, then I am happy to consider smaller.

Thanks

Have the 50" 700B myself, was recommended as an entry level 4k HDR TV, and haven't been disappointed for TV, movies or PS4 use.

The LG has the best operating system off the bunch imo and if that model comes with the magic remote that is excellent to use also.
All the HDMI inputs on the LG are full fat 4K ready and it also supports all the major HDR formats including Dolby Vision which is great if you intend watching Netflix 4K.

The panasonic would be my second choice of that bunch and that uses a IPS panel made by LG anyway so performance should be similar.

This one: LG 55SK8000PLB 55

I'll give you the pros and cons of lg.

Their panels aren't true 4k they have an extra white pixel in between the RGB pixels. So its really 3k as 1k of the pixels are white. So you are missing 25% of the pixels a va or oled panel has. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference but I thought you should know this. I own an LG and i think it's brilliant wouldn't change it because i needed an ips panel in that room.

However it has the best viewing angles. Best built in sound. Best operating system.

It doesn't go as bright or as dark as a va panel though. So if you sit straight on then don't buy ips panels. However the colours look amazing on the ips panel. I found the bright va panels look not as deep as an ips does. If you own an ips monitor then you will know what I mean.

If you are going to be sitting at an angle some of the time buy LG. If not then get the Sony.

Have you considered a 4k Hisense TV? I've a 49" model of theirs and it was under £400, visually it's very good for the money. Sky HD looks really good and 4k films I've played via the external USB3 has also looked great.

Downsides for me is Youtube sometimes has issues when using it built in and they definitely need a sound bar.

For what you're after though you could get a Hisense one and the extra sound components and be very happy with it.

Panasonic fan - would consider last years pan ex750 50"~£500, or wait until the price on their newer/late-to-market fx750 w/ips panel has dropped to <£800, as opposed to £700 55fx700
... not the best time to buy
fx700 flatpanels review, i ref'd in earlier posts, did not suggest big improvements over ex range.

like sony .. some of manufacturers are not improving lcd picture/panel's just adding likes of dolby vision, which is debateably beneficial if set has good/dynamic tone mapping

Thanks for all the information and suggestions. It's been very useful!

I have decided to hang on for now. I plan to sit directly in front of the TV so don't think I need an IPS panel and may have a better viewing with VA.

I'm not in a massive rush so will wait to see what offers come up. I'm thinking it's a bad time for buying TV's with the model refreshes keeping prices high and the old stock being mostly sold out.

However, I can be a little impulsive so I'll see how long that patience lasts :D

Or go OLED ;)

Haha well that was my original intention... Before realising how much buying a first home would cost me :D think I'll try to be patient and save up a little longer!

Stick to ya LCD - imagine spending all that money on your house and then your brand new OLED goes and gets image burn.
