I am looking for a PSU for a new build spec as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
Storage: Crucial M4 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Additional 2-3 mechanical hard drives.
GPU: Will either be a 280X/GTX770/GTX780 depending on what I can find.

I am assuming I will be looking at a 650W PSU or an 850W if I wanted to go crossfire/SLI (which I don't currently). Which of the following would be best:
EVGA SuperNova G1 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (120-G1-0650-XR)
Seasonic X-Series 650w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 650W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Or the XFX XTR Series 650w 80+ Gold Fully Modular Psu (which I believe is made by Seasonic) but sadly not stocked by OCUK

When I enter all the components I come up with 423W, I feel that adding a couple of HD, fans and over clocking would likely bump that up to around the 500W. Would 550W really give enough headroom? And considering efficiency curves is it a false economy to save a few pounds on the PSU?

Superflower receives a lot of love here, for me Seasonic are excellent, I believe the XFX models are Seasonic made, the EVGA also has a 10 year warranty. What makes the superflower the best option?

That 423w is the minimum recommended PSU and not total load of the system.

You be lucky to pull 350w from the wall - a overclocked system of mine (the 4770k and 670WF card and custom water) pulled 330w from the mains with Furmark and prime 95 running together.

Normal gaming is in the 250-350w range. Only Anno 2070 has pulled the 422w. The biggest problem for me with the Superflower Golden Green HX range is the hard wired cables. I wolud pick a modular psu anyday for the ease of cable management. Out of your original list I would go for the Superflower Leadex Gold 650w but would have to cover up those awful led's. It won't be enough if you get a GTX 780 and Sli them though. You would need 750-850w for that in which case take a look at the excellent EVGA Supernova G2 units with their awesome 10 year warranty. They are built by Superflower and based on the leadex Gold platform.

Yes I'm unlikely to SLI ever on this platform. If I move to a 4k monitor I would also change platform for the added pci-e lanes. I belive the EVGA I linked in the first post also has the 10 year warranty, are the G1 units inferior?

The problem for me is that there are no reviews yet so I am not comfortable with recommending a unknown psu. The manufacturer, FSP, is not a high end manufacturer like Superflower or Seasonic plus it's a quad rail design when I would prefer a single rail.

That's fair, G1 made by FSP and G2 by superflower? I notice the superflower recommended in #2 and #3 is not modular. I would have a strong preference for a fully modular design.

In which case about the only choice is the 650w Leadex Gold you were thinking about in your original post. Hang on until tommorrow and they might be on this week only. They seem to be on it more or less every other week and this has been their week off.

The sockets where you plug the cables in all light up and you can't turn them off. Personally I would hate that and think it looks very tacky. It would certainly put me off buying one and is one of the reasons why I recommend the EVGA G2 units. They are basically the same but no awful led's plus that awesome 10 year warranty.

Superflower do a modular version of the Golden Green but OCUK doesn't sell them. I expect this is because the price would conflict with the other models they sell.

I shall try and pick it up when it comes up on this week only. Some people mention annoying LEDs anything to be concerned about?

I actually quite like them. Certainly don't think they look tacky although I don't really see them from where I sit. I wanted a white PSU to go with my case though ;)

It's massively overpriced for the mediocre unit it is. Reviews are not exactly brilliant with scores of 8-8.8 or Silver. Anything that scores less than a 9 or gold isn't worth looking at to my mind because there is so much choice available now at a better price.
