got the evga after all, thanks for the suggestions.
installed it 5 mins ago - painless and now almost twice as fast as my 960. Probably run it for a week before i overclock just in case!

Just on that monitor, get the AOC Q2778VQE
Been researching all day on a 1440P monitor to go with my GTX970 and that one is best bang for the buck.
